for example i find that when im playing i tend to stick to a particular scale
especially when improvising stuff

and even when i try to steer away from this i drift back to playing the same old stuff

anyone else have this problem ? or know how to solve it ????

cheers

You're in good company my friend . This happens to a lot of us and is natural but I feel your frustration. What I personally do when this happens to me is I will forget the scales, forget the chords and try and come up with a riff just by jumping around on the fretboard and seeing what sounds good. It's really interesting what you can come up with by doing this.

If I'm trying to use something specific for the first time improvising I limit how many notes I'm using - so I'll stick to one octave, or one position max, until I'm comfortable with the sound, then start expanding it and moving around the neck.
