A metronome is a thing that ticks at regular intervals to help you keep time. It helps as you can use it to make sure you are playing in time - without a metronome most people will naturally slow down slightly on harder parts, and speed up slightly on the bits they know, or if they're nervous. You can get them from a music shop, or you can find free ones online - although they may be less accurate depending on what your internet connection is like.
