I've always wondered this, because in the UK we have a large nation network that delivers all our mail and small packages (Royal Mail), and then we have couriers who deliver special items.
But I've never heard of a standard national service in the USA, but maybe I'm wrong.
Is there a standard service, or is it all done by couriers? I only tend to hear of FedEx or UPS..

USPS - United States Postal Service. Basically, it's the equivalent to the Royal Mail (just not as good OR reliable. ).

In terms of courier type services? Nothing TOO specialized. To be honest, our courier services are about the same as the Royal Mail, in terms of speed and efficiency. Like, if you're getting a larger package delivered, like if you ordered a guitar, you would use UPS (United Parcel Service), Fed-Ex (Federal Express), DHL, etc.

But, yes, basic letter carrying is done by the USPS.

See those are awesome mail trucks.

Ours are.....

Meh. I REALLY want one, because I think they would be cool to customise, etc. but still. They're just so....plain.

Yep. USPS is the government-sanctioned delivery service, which is generally used for mailing letters and documents. If you have something you absolutely don't want to lose, it's best to send via UPS (United Parcel Service) or Fed-Ex (Federal Express). And of course Western Union is primarily used for money orders.

Yeah.

Actually I get things faster and cheaper via USPS than I do when I order something that gets shipped UPS.

I have no problem with USPS either. We occasionally have a chancy mailman, but the same can be said about UPS, and FedEx.

Reliable, sure, but in the office a pain in the ass to deal with. They're mismanaged like it's nationwide policy, and I'm not talking about by the government.

Oh. I've never had to deal with them in the office.

That might be part of the reason that the government is looking to shut down around 700 post offices nationwide.

My fiancee's mom has worked in post offices for like twenty years now. They rarely have more than one person scheduled to work the window, and he goes really slow (in protest IMO), resulting in eight-deep lines.

Actually, I think that guy retired...

One person should not be stuck with the window by himself all day in Christmas season.

USPS has been good to me, except small parcel service rates almost seem too high to me.

One of my cousins used to work at a branch and he spent half his time complaining to his superiors about how his co-worker was a witch and that she was trying to curse him. Don't do that many drugs kids.
