Are there any? Lots of bands say they are, but I've yet to really find out. Are there any bands that will do a jazz tune, a hard rock tune, a country tune and other **** all in the same record? (Those are just examples).

It is possible, but not practical.

...modes and scales are still useless.

Doubt it. People seem inclined to put EVERY band into a genre.

This.

Bands without a defined style get nowhere.

It seems good in theorey, but not practice i think. Bands will always have a tendancy to lean toward one style, just because as musicians they each have their own certain style of playing/singing.

Didn't they have lots of trouble placing QOTSA into a genre? So a lot of people just dubbed them Stoner rock?
I love Foxy Shazam more than you.

I tried it once. We played fusion, blues, classic rock and a wee bit of metal. We got nowhere.

that's when people make up a new genre, duh.

somebody will always have a name for it. genres are created to get an idea of a band's sound before hearing them, so naturally there's going to be some sort of description for any band.

I don't know if you'd consider this a legit genre of music, but wouldn't that be under "comedy"?

Everything has a genre.

I'd call an assorted bunch of songs of diff genres to be the Variety genre.

that's one reason you dont see it much

it's also not practical as far as a fan base goes. who would want to go to a show or buy a cd knowing they'll only like 2 of the songs? far more people are picky about their bands sticking in the genres they like than are not.

weird al and all those people kind of have to do it to get anywhere.

also notice how most bands will be listed under more than one genre. that's generally because putting out a whole album that fits strictly into one of the sub sub sub sub genres that we have today would result in every song sounding the exact same.
#24
i think a band is only genreles if they play a little bit of every genre out there

which i would like to see, actually

Took the words right off my mouth. In theory, it's not possible, because whether you like it or not people will associate you to a certain genre.

Dave Matthews Band imo . . . they have bluegrass tunes, some really jazzy ones, funky songs, even a few songs with screaming.

Beck could do it. I hear he transcends genres even as he re-invents them.

(on a side note - hell yes, Beck!)

Some people say Queen was kind of close to this.

Those kinds of bands are usually lumped into some rock category or another. I enjoy a really diverse band at times.

create music so weird that you get your own genre...like Primus.
The content of this signature is pretty much irrelevant

Hmm, I can't think of any genres that Paul Gilbert hasn't played.
I suppose that, to be fair, I can't think of an especially large amount of genres at the moment.

Edit: I think the same goes for Buckethead. That one might depend on what we count as pop though.
