So, I'm in the market for a new amp. I'm sending my Blackstar HT-5 back next week and need a new amp. I want a high gain amp, but I know there aren't many in my budget. Mainly for bedroom practice. Around $500. Preferably new but I won't refuse anything irresistable on CL (Indianapolis,IN). I play hard rock/heavy metal (BLS, GN'R, Metallica, LOG, COB, etc.). It doesn't need orgasmic cleans, as long as they are decent i will be happy. Not a big modeling amps fan. I don't use many pedals (Distortion/OD, Wah) but I MUCH prefer my gain from the amp. I have a couple amps in mind. First, the Bugera 6262 but I hesitate spending $700, and 120w for practicing (although it sounded just as amazing at low volumes). Also the Spider Valve, B-52 AT 112(No where near me has them so I can't try it though), and anything else you might suggest. Talk me into one of the amps from my list or one of your recommendations. Let me hear it...

I'd probably go for the Bugera if I were you. I just got back from GC a little over an hour ago and everytime I play the 6260 I'm more and more impressed at the value. The B-52 wouldn't be bad either though.

Not sure... I've never heard of those so i'll do a bit of research. It's 120w and I'm only practicing. And I'm 45 minutes away from Indy also... I'm in richmond.. where are you?

It's not that I didn't like it, it just wasn't for me. It's a great amp, don't get me wrong, but it didn't have near enough gain for what I want.

West Lafayette

Much further than 45 min if your in richmond and not indy

Its a bit loud for just practice, unless you are jamming / gigging

The only problem with it, is it says crate on it

Ahh okay! Did you try boosting it?

Have you seen this video? He's getting some pretty crazy gain there

If you're just looking for something to practice with, maybe go with a POD or something like that?

The B-52 you mentioned is pretty good. Also, if you can, go used. Try to find a 5150/6505. If you dont care about how great your cleans are, look at a 5150/6505. The gain is amazing, clean is ehhh..

Edit: 5150 may be to big if you only want it for bedroom practice.

Yes, sort of. And don't worry about it

btw, theres a few 5150s/6505s on indy's craiglists, or was recently
and their clean doesn't suck as bad as most people say, its just not amazing

B1 is the Sharp Channel of the Bogner/Hafler Triple Giant, not an Uberschall.

Troll craigslist and use the link in my sig. Be patient. Blackheart won't work. XXX or Ultra maybe. You want a combo?

B52 for $370 is pretty hard to beat. Used valveking with a speaker swap?

Yeah I want a combo. I want to try the XXX's and Bugera 333's but I haven't found one. And are the reliabilty on the B52's still ****ty or have the fixed their problems?

the ht-5 + an OD pedal should be more then enough gain

07 Fender American Deluxe Strat
07 Fender Custom Telecaster
09 Seymour Duncan Pickup Booster
09 Fulltone OCD V.4
10 Ibanez WH-10 V.2
09 Splawn SuperStock
10 Jet City JCA-20
97 Fender Hot Rod Deluxe

Yeh the SICK! bit sounds a bit stupid.

I don't want a pedal for the HT-5 I just want a different amp altogether. How much are the 5150/6505's and the XXX's? And how are the cleans on these amps?

5150/6505s are balls to wall metal machines - better for rhythm and chugga chugga.

XXXs/JSXs are good for chug too but have better cleans and better for lead work.

imo

you can find used 5150 and XXX combos in the $500 - $700 range.

use the link in my sig to get an idea

Ok. What do you think about the Line 6 SV's? And the Valveking's?

They aren't that bad. They sound better than the SS Spiders, that's for sure.

However, I'd wait for the SV MKII's to come out.

Well, actually I meant can they do what I'm looking for them to? Same for the Valvekings...

And I would not spend $850 on the SV MKII

Well, yes, both amps can.

The SV has better metal tones, while the modded-VK make better hard/classic rock.

Can they do metalcore-type gain? Or do they need an OD?

Both can, and the SV without a boost does it better than the upgraded-VK ("modded" would mean OT change, etc) with a boost.

I think you can find a better amp than either of those for metalcore, though.
But, between those, I think you'd like the SV better. A lot of people don't like VK tone.
Check the VK thread, if you want to hear some metalcore tones. They are posted somewhere in there...

Ok thanks for the help bro... and I prefer my gain from the amp for the most part also. The heaviest stuff I play is COB and some metalcore.

So far my interest is in:
Bugera 6262/ Peavey 5150/6505
Peavey XXX/ Bugera 333
Spider Valve
B52 AT-112

Any others anyone would suggest I should look at?

My vote goes to the XXX. They are great amps all around.

If it's too bright for you, get some JJ's for tubes.
