i dont know if this is the right place to post this but ive got a problem. My guitar recently stopped working and my toggle switch (LP style) broke so i took it to a shop and they said the input jack was broken. so i bought the new switch and jack, installed them that night and it started working. it worked for about 3 or 4 days after that then stopped again. now when i plug it into my amp it hums like hell and no other sound comes out unless i crank the amp all the way up and turn it on drive, but even then i only get a tiny amount. if anyone can help id really appreciate it.

Specifically when checking the wiring, check the continuity with a meter. If you have any cold solder joints, this should help ID them.

Also try the guitar in another amp. Or try other guitars in your amp. There's a slim possibility that the amp was damaged by the guitar's previous malfunction. Good luck.

my dad is a certified electrician and we both looked at it with a meter. none of the wires are bad and all the solders are fine.

You know, actually as I read through your post again, I realised I had exactly the same problem on my Washburn when I got it from eBay. :/
I sent it in to the tech to take a look at it, and all he did was replace the switch and it was fine. I guess that's my solution now. :p
#10
yeah like i said, i replaced the jack and the swith and it worked fine for a couple days.

my guitar is a cheap-ass les paul copy. is it possible that the new switch and jack were higher quality and they messed up some of the other cheap electronics?

No, I don't think it is.
Have you checked the pots, and the ground to the bridge?

Try using a different cable. Maybe the cable you're using broke internally.

thats ur best bet, unless you can absolutely pinpoint the faulty component.

wire it up straight to the jack, test.
then try adding the switch, test that
then volume, then tone, etc, etc...

okay then.

you say your dad is a "certified electrician". surely he has a meter. I can explain how to do a few simple resistance measurements to help diagnose the problem. But first I need some information about this guitar. Does it have just one volume control or does it have separate volumes for each pickup?

post a clear drawing of the wiring. else it won't be possible to tell you how to diagnose this problem.

MAster Volume and Volume pot for EACH pickup?
That's basically 2 volume pots for each pickup..
You probably have master that controls both pickups volum, and each pup has its own volume as well.

that drawing is useless.
there is more that one connection from the pickups to the pots, etc.
your drawing doesn't show them.

please follow the directions.

Start with something like this and edit it in Paint to make it match what you have.

+1 to SYK.

TS, you say that you looked at the wiring and that it matched everything in the diagram. I find this hard to believe for a few reasons.

1: You don't have a capacitor on your master volume pot. If you did, it would be master tone, as shown in SYK's provided diagram. Didn't catch that?

2: The Seymour Duncan diagram and your diagram do not match. lolwut.

3: You haven't been very reliable in this thread, so I'm not sure if I can trust you saying, "I looked at it, and its the same."
#40
SomeoneYouKnew: If you dont believe me fine then. thats your problem. stop being an ignorant asshole.

Baby Joel:

1: that was my mistake but the capacitors are on top of the bridge and neck control pots

2: The seymour duncan diagram looks nothing like my guitar. there arent that many wires. I SHOWED EVERY CONNECTION ON MINE.

3: Ive been as helpful as i can.
