Modules:

***Please note, soundclips can be found all over the net for these modules, however I have found, in my opinion, the best sound clips to be at: http://www.bandslink.com/randall.htm

Tweed:

Based on the preamp circuit of a ‘59 Fender® Bassman™. A classic Fender tone with huge bottom end and a nice amount of grit. Great for any Blues and Country tone.

Blackface:

Based on the preamp circuit of a Fender® Blackface Twin™. Legendary Fender clean with biting midrange and sparkling highs. The standard for any style of clean tone.

Deluxe:

Based on the preamp circuit of a Fender® Blackface Deluxe™. Tone that bleeds country music. Great mid-range and top end spank with more bite than the Blackface preamp.

SL+:

Based on the preamp circuit of a hot rodded Marshall® Super Lead. The classic Super Lead circuit with more gain and punch. Covers any classic Zeppelin to modern Zakk tone.

Plexi:

Based on the preamp circuit of a classic Marshall® Plexi. Anything from Page to Angus to Gibbons. The amp that defines the 70’s rock and punk tone.

JTM:

Based on the preamp circuit of a classic Marshall® JTM45. Classic mid-gain tone with huge bottom end and smooth overdrive.

Treadplate:

The tone that defines the modern Nu-Metal sound. Cutting tone with strong low end punch, biting mid-range & sizzling hi-end definition. Covers any modern rock tone.

Ultra:

Extreme hi-gain with tight low end & liquid sustain. This one exemplifies the classic Randall hi-gain tone. Perfect for any classic to modern metal rhythm or lead tone.

Clean:

An extremely warm & fat clean tone. Perfect for the jazz and blues guitarist or any player looking for a smooth, robust, clean sound. Stays clean even at high volumes.

Top Boost:

A clean module with Vox like tone characteristics. Nice chime on the high's with warm low bottom end. Sounds very acoustic like due to reduced mid-range.

XTC:

Based on the preamp circuit of a Bogner® Ecstasy red channel. A great all-around hi-gain tone with good low end and cutting mid-range. This screaming preamp covers any rock & metal tone with ease.

Ultra XL:

A modern version of our trademark hi-gain tone with extreme gain, focused lows and highs, plus a boosted mid-range to really cut through the mix. Perfect for any modern metal rhythm & lead tone.
I've bought, sold, and traded more gear than I care to admit.

Signature Modules:

Kirk Hammett:

KH1:

Based on Kirk’s classic clean tones, the voicing of this preamp is based on various clean amps that Kirk has used throughout his illustrious career. A great clean tone for any style, but tailored for rock and metal because it stays clean at higher volumes even with active pickups.

KH2:

Based on Kirk’s signature rhythm tone, the KH2 instantly becomes a classic because of its extreme wide-range of tones. This mid to hi-gain preamp is perfect for any classic rock and metal tone and for that early Metallica rhythm tone.

KH3:

Based on Kirk’s legendary hi-gain lead tone, this preamp takes the KH2 to a higher level of gain and sustain. Utilizing the same tone circuit as the KH2, the KH3 is tailored more for the modern rock and metal guitarist who demands a high level of gain.

Dan Donegan:

1086:

A revolutionary modern hi-gain tone with additional gain & voicing options. This extremely versatile module has a tight pick attack and focused low end. The exclusive Gain and Voicing switches allow this module to cover any classic Plexi to modern Rectifier tones.

George Lynch:

Super V:

A clean module with Vox like characteristics. Nice chime on the highs with warm low bottom end producing a great electric acoustic like tone. Breaks up nice at higher volumes.

Mr. Scary:

The trademark Lynch heavy rhythm & lead tone of the famed Dokken era. A bit tighter with more gain & punch than the Brahma preamp.

Brahma:

The true holy grail of mid to classic hi-gain tone has the classic British roar with signature American tone mods. This is Lynch’s flavor of the classic Plexi tone.

Grail:

Lynch’s modern lead & rhythm tone. A true Rectifier feel with tight low end and cutting mid-range. Great for all Lynch Mob and modern Lynch tones.
I've bought, sold, and traded more gear than I care to admit.

The Randall MTS series has a massive modding community. The mods are made to the modules, and can change the tone of your module drastically. I would not reccomend getting modules modified unless you are unhappy with the tone of a specific module, or are looking for a very specific tone.

The forum at mtsforum.grailtone.com is a great place to interact and and ask questions to the modifiers themselves. Most of the modifiers are in the continental United States, however 1 specific modder is located in the Czech Republic.

Here is a list of modifiers and their respective websites:

Dave Friedman: Racksystems http://www.racksystemsltd.com/

Pete Turley: Gigmods http://www.gigmods.com

Anthony: Salvation Mods http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=909142

Trace Davis: Voodoo Amplification http://www.voodooamps.com/home/

Bruce Egnater: Egnater Amplifiers http://www.egnater.com/

This is what I know for modifiers with actual webpages. The rest can be found on the MTS Grailtone forum.

Yeah i got a few mods but here's what i got:

Brown - No mods just a great brown sound. Not made anymore.

Tweed - Modded by Jaded Faith, It's got a pull knob on the gain to put more gain on tap and the bright switch is now a "spank" switch. When switched on it gets all this spank that a real tweed has it's great. You can go from perfect cleans to Absolute perfect AC/DC sound with the spank switch on and the gain knob pulled love it!

Ultra - Also modded by Jaded, He made it replicate a KT88 Baron Custom. It sounds very close to the videos but it stiill has it's own sound. It's got a tight switch and a mid switch. The tight has 3 options. Middle, for very tight bass, Down for full looser bass, and up for a mix between the two. The Mid switch makes it so when in the up position it has a ton more mids and in the low position it is scooped.

XTC - Nothing special except it has a "home made" bass cap from the last user. I have no clue what he did but he mad a bass cap with some weird components. Looks like a tree lmao.

RM22 - Mmmmmmmmm

Ahh, sounds fun haha.

I'll probably be picking up a Blackface, Ultra XL and XTC if I end up getting an RM100

Any idea what would be the best module to keep my 8-string tight?

Honestly... I don't recommend the XTC unless you are getting it modded when you get it. It's probably the worst stock module but the others are great. I had a blackface and Ultra XL and they are perfectly fine not modded. Modded though....well you know.. , plus mad cool points!

WTF - We'll see about that! I've emailed them daily about that thing!

Edit!: Oh! and you question for 8 string. An Ultra XL would be great but, a Grail or 1087 or Salvation's 1666 would probably be best.

For Animals As Leaders and Cynic an Ultra XL would be perfect. You could get both the lead and rhythm with it.

Edit!: But! if you really want the tone. Get the Angel mod by Salvation. That'd be best.

I'd really like to get the RM22. I want a MTS amp that has two channels, but is 15W. My RM80 has JJ 6V6's which give it 25W, and even that is too much for bedroom practice. But alas, i have many more things to get b4 i even consider getting another amp. I need new preamp tubes, new pickups for my Epi SG i just got for my Line 6 Spider, a ISP Decimator G String, some pedals, and a plethora of mods that i want (and can't get).

I'm really interested in Jaded Faith's Recto, Salvation Benzin, Salvation 1666, Angel, Pit Viper, Deadplate, Loneclean, Pete's Mesa Mark Series, Pete's Recto (unless i get Rob's), and the Custom 3. I currently have the ULead, 1087, Clean, and Blackface. Once i get new tubes, i'm probably going to sell the Clean, seeing as how i only need one clean module. I will eventually get the ULead mod'd to the Mesa Mark, and the Blackface mod'd to the Loneclean. I may sell my 1087 to get a 1666, Benzin, or Rob Recto, but i'm not sure yet. Too many option....not enough money......probably the most GAS i've ever had. On top of all that, i want a new guitar....maybe a ESP EC-401...or a DBZ. But now i need to focus on the essentials (strings, pickups, and tubes). It sucks being broke and unable to get a job....

I'd also like to turn my RM80 combo into a head and cab, but it will be a while till that is an option. If not that, i'd like to at least change the speakers.

Anyway, great thread. This will save me from having to type the same thing over and over again to people looking for a new amp. I can just post the link to this thread. I can't count how many posts i've made recommending the RM50 with various different modules and mod's.

Salvation Benzin, Angel

I actually heard that Anthony from Salvation took part in designing the new Diezel and ENGL modules for Randall. I'm curious to see if that's true... It would certainly benefit Randall to have stock modules that sound as good as Salvation's. Of course, that would ruin a good portion of the modders' business

Ya, i'm wondering that too. That would be much better for me if i didn't have to send my module all the way to the Czech Republic. I'm wondering how much they are similar, if at all. Either way, i may just get the money and send a module to Anthony anyway.

I'm also wanting to get the Ultra Curve, and possibly that acoustic module. The Curve looks amazing. I can't wait to see what else Randall has in store. Modules with built in effects? Anthony has already included a noise gate in his that is just as good as a ISP. But then that might defeat the purpose of the FX loops. Either way, i can't wait for the new modules and amps.

Add Jaded Faith (Rob) to the modder's list. Hopefully i can get one of his Recto mods soon. He says that some people said that they like it better than the actual Mesa Rectifier. I was blown away by the Single Rect, so now i want his mod.

It might be worth mentioning the different wattages that can be obtained depending on the power tubes used.

RM20/22:

EL84's = 15W (obviously); bias to 18-22 mV (?)

RM50:

JJ 6V6's (only JJ's) = ~25W; biased to 18-22 mV
6L6's, KT66's, 5881's = 50W; biased to 28-35 mV
EL34's, KT77's, 6CA7's = 50W; biased to 30-38 mV
E34L's = 50W; biased to 35-45 mV
6550's, KT88's = 80-100W; biased to 35-45 mV

RM100:

JJ 6V6's (only JJ's) = ~50W; biased to 18-22 mV
6L6's, KT66's, 5881's = 100W; biased to 28-35 mV
EL34's, KT77's, 6CA7's = 100W; biased to 30-38 mV
E34L's = 100W; biased to 35-45 mV
6550's, KT88's = 100-120W; biased to 35-45 mV

RT2/50

For mono, refer to the RM50 list (50W per channel)
For stereo, refer to the RM100 list. (both channels)

If i got any of this info incorrect, please let me know so i can fix it. I'm a little unsure about the EL84 bias levels, the JJ's in the RM100, and the E34L wattages.

Thanks, John.

And Brendan, just quote my post from the GFM thread about the modules. It's a better evaluation of each module's sound than what's provided on the Randall site.

I have so much GAS right now for one of these

I have a budget of $400 though (+ how much i have from selling my Blackstar HT-5 head and it's 2 1x10 cabs)

Any ideas on which ones i should get? I want to have the ability to switch between 2 modules, but if it's not possible, then i understand.

And finally! About how much time does it take to remove and put back in to the slot (is it feasible to do in between song breaks for a gig?)

Thank ahead of time

Hey man,

You can get an RM100 head USED for around $650-850 USD. Each module is gonna run you about $150 used or about $200 new. If you only had a single channel, you can pop these in and out pretty quick, however it would be a pain and worth spending more money on the amp the first time around.
I've bought, sold, and traded more gear than I care to admit.
