Hey, I got a batch of cable & male & female XLR connectors yesterday, I've got them all soldered together (Hot to point 2, screen to point 1 & cold to point 3) but I've seen some cables before that are soldered with a 4th connection between either the screen and the hot, or the ground and the flat earth pin.

My question is this: is it necessary to add any other connections other than hot, cold & screen, and if so, what difference does it make?
