Hi all,

My name is Shane and I just signed up to these forums. My main instrument is a homemade, electrified 3-string cigar box guitar. It's played with a slide (I use a spark plug socket). If anyone is interested in building their own, I put some free plans on my website. LINK --> http://cigarboxguitar.com/build.html

All you need is a wood cigar box (easy to find at a cigar store or on eBay), a plank of poplar from Home Depot and some strings and tuners.

Well, consider this my introduction! (And sorry for originally starting this thread in THE PIT! I'm still trying to find my way around this place...)

-Shane Speal
ps. I live in York, PA and frequent the open mic at the First Capital Dispensing Co. every Wednesday night. If you live nearby, come on out.

screw cigar box guitars- how do you make that FACE?

actually, really cool. once I finish my dream bass and that mutilated autoharp I might take you up on that offer.

and I think the Pit was happy to have a useful thread for once.

I wouldn't call what we have here on the Bass Forum a mentality. It's more like the sharing part of an AA meeting.

Yeah, I do a lot of modding art...except my 'normal' guitars are weird, too. You can see some at http://shanespeal.bigcartel.com

As for performing, I'm 100% cigar box now.

Start with different gauges of weed whacker line. There's been a few people who have made 2,3 and 4 string cigar box basses. Search around www.cigarboxnation.com or do a google on Wichita Sam's Cigar Box Basses

...cut and pasted from an old website I contributed to:

Tunings for a 3-string cigar box guitar
(utilizing A,D,G strings from an acoustic guitar string set)

All notes are listed from low to high (bass to treble)

Open A: A,E,A'

Open G: G,D,G'

A7 (the magic jazz tuning): A,E,G

A6 (Hawaiian tuning): A,E,F#

G9 (mandolin-type tuning/Shane Speal's "sitar" tuning***): G,D,A
***Shane uses the flat edge of a bone slide to buzz against the high string, creating a sitar-like sound. As heard in the Jug Fusion song "Bone To Pick"

Dirty E : Ultra-low E, E, B (in this tuning, the low E is practically flapping against the fretboard. Great for mean and dirty blues)

Reported for what? Having the creativity to do such a thing as amazing as this? Besides, He's new to the forums, don't expect him to know how to use the searchbox, or where to find it.

+1 on the guitar dude, badass.
