I'm auditioning for an after high school funk band. There are about 5 other guitarists auditioning for it and I need suggestions for a song to play during my interview. My interview is on Friday so I have some time to learn something. Does not have to be a whole song, but I'd like for it to be a bit challenging but not too hard.

I'm into hard and classic rock in general. Stuff like Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Rush, Pink Floyd, Queen etc.

So far I thought of:
Jimi Hendrix- Little Wing intro
Red Hot Chili Peppers- Under the Bridge intro
Led Zeppelin- Whole Lotta Love Solo
Pink Floyd- Another Brick in The Wall pt. 2 solo
Queen- Bohemian Rhapsody Solo

Suggestions?

EDIT: the name of the actual band is a bit misleading. They play contemporary music in general, just to be different from the classical stuff we play in band or orchestra and whatnot. It's more like a Funk/Ska/blues/pop/rock band, so to say.

Why don't you play some funk? It seems like it would be appropriate.

Agreed.

A good place to start, would be the first ever funk song: Papa's Got a Brand New Bag by the mighty mighty James Brown. (The man deserves two 'mighty's, honestly, he was a motherfunking genius.)

Tell me baby by the chilli peppers has pretty nice funk riffs for guitar, more so if you have the bass. Also, go listen to Vultures by Mayer, that is a real nice funk guitar sound, more a blending of genres like you listed.

Cool suggestions guys, I might take up bass seeing as I'm the only guitarist who signed up with bass under my played instruments next to guitar.

I'm interested in the "funky" Mars Volta stuff. Care to elaborate?

You MUST play "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" by James Brown. As well as "Give Up the Funk (Tear the Roof off the Sucker)" by Parliament. They are both classic funk songs, and I guarantee you've heard both countless times.

Just make sure that you make it look like you're making hot, sweaty love to your guitar. Thats what the funk is all about.

Do Thanyoufahlettinmebemiceel***ain by Sly & The Family Stone, or any of their songs actually. And listen to some later Marvin Gaye - but not too late mind you.

anything by Tower of Power, Diggin on James brown is also a good idea its fun and fairly easy. I agree with the others you shouldnt definitely use a Funk song for a FUNK tryout.

Doesn't matter what you play. The most important thing (as someone who has auditioned guitarists for a funk band) is that you have pinpoint accuracy and that you keep it flowing. Funk guitar isn't difficult but it has to be done perfectly or the groove ndies which is the absolute worst thing that can possibly happen for a funk band.
