Hey UG,

Quick question: can balanced preamp tubes be used in any slot? Obviously the idea is to put one in the phase inverter, but will it hurt if I have excess high gain balanced tubes and they go in the gain stack slots?

Cheers UG.

No, it will not hurt, most 12ax7 are balanced even the "standard" test, they only charge extra for the "balanced" tubes because the test them so you are for sure geting a balanced tube. For Hi-Fi this is more important, but with guitar amps an unbalanced PI only adds more coloration and to the overal tone of the amp.

preamp tubes that are 'balanced' won't be 'balanced' anymore after a few weeks of play... so do as you wish

Balanced preamp tubes aren't even necessary for guitar amps. They will not make your amp sound or perform any better.
