Hi,
I really want to know how to get the tone that slash form Guns 'N' Roses has.
I am thinking of getting a Marshal DSL401 tube amp as I love the sound of it.
How would I get the closest sound to slash's that is possible.
What EQ does he use?
I really really really really want to know!!!

Thanks again!

Well, the DSL401 is alright I guess, it sounds a lot better cranked though. Anyways, it should get you close to the tone, just boost the mids quite a bit (about 3 o' clockish), keep the bass around midway, and put the treble up to about 1 o' clock. Remember to use the neck pickup with the tone all the way off when needed.

And a guitar with humbuckers will help too.

My guitar sounds identical to GNR, and my entire setup cost me £250. You just need any marshall, a humbucker equipped guitar, and a Zvex fuzz factory. It is the best pedal ever.

uhhh not any marshall...lol unless you want crushing overdrive stay away from MGs lol.

Alnico II Humbuckers or any lower or moderate output humbuckers will get you very close

For the sounds that he gets on albums, there is thousands of dollars worth of gear (like compression, EQ, reverb, more compression, Tape emulators or actual tape saturation, multiple amps, amp modelers, etc...) so it is almost impossible to get the exact sound, but getting the Guitar and Amp will give you a good sound.

Despite what you may have read in Total Guitar, no, you need more than that.

I guess you've been under a rock hahah....slash uses gibson les pauls...sd alinco 2 pups...and marshall silver jubillee heads....I used to be a huge fan and was interested in his sound too when I was starting out....he has to use some kind of overdrive or something I would think cause I had that amp before it with the pre amp gain cranked you don't get enough gain to play his leads? But I've never heard him talk about effects? ....he used to use bs rich mockingbirds a lot also.....get a wah pedal, he uses one in just about every song...get a nose ring and a carton of malboro reds hahahaha....oh and some chaps to wear over your jeans hahaha

If I was you though I would just steal his licks not his tone and that kinda goes along with the "slashs fingers" thing...slash will sound like slash on your equipment you have now because of his....no one remembers guitarists that rip people off on equpment....oh crap what am I saying slash is remembered even though he has the same vibe as page and joe perry lol jk

Because the Alnico II Pro's are very specialised pickups, and will only help you get Slash's tone if you also have an amp exactly like his, a guitar exactly like his, and you know how to actually use them properly.

For the vast, vast majority of cases, and if any part of your rig is diffreent to Slash's at all, then Alnico II Pros will actually just make the differences between your gear and his even more obvious.

I tried a lot to sound like Slash. He was my inspiration and i think most people try to sound like their idols. Like Slash even. He wanted to be like Joe Perry of Aerosmith. And that's what he did. But anyway. here we go.

In my trials at the sound I found that the BIGGEST thing is in his Les Paul's pickups. The Alnico II's are definitaley (if not) the biggest part. Then it's his amp settings i guess. I use. Gain- 6.5, Bass- 7, Mid- 4.5, Bass- 7. And that's in the new Marshall 2466 Vintage Modern Half-Stack that i bought haha. But it sounds SO close. More like his GnR than VR. But if I tune my Les Paul to Standard my VR sound is perfect. and Down a half-step and I sound a lot like Slash did when he played live in GnR rather than the studio recordings. But i see why you want to sound like Slash. anyone who thinks you need your own sound is an idiot. Becasue copy Slash as much as you want. eventually you wont sound like him anymore. Gradually you will shift into a completely new thing. Although sounding a bit like Slash. More like yourself. Good Luck man. I hope you get the sound you want.

Oh and I use a Gibson Les Paul Standard (It's a Gold Top so i dont think you can get them anymore, but it has Seymour Duncan Alnico II Pros, and I use .011-.048 guage strings. Not sure if that has anything to due with it though. And Also a B.C. Rich Mockingbird ST outfitted the exact same as the LP. anyway. good luck!)

I dotn think so. I dont use EVERYTHING exactly liek Slash, although I play A lot like him. And I sound close. If I try. I am like a combination of Slash and Zakk Wylde when i do my own stuff. But yeah. The pickups will help a lot. They just have to be in the guitar and they work. no special things or nothing. Or at least not here. The guy is looking for help. Not your opinionated ideas. Have you even tried to sound liek Slash? Obviously you are no soul man... Ew.... Music Theory.

Alright my last post here. Everyone is saying rediculous stuff. Cigarettes, the hat, and everything. Screw that. You people are stupid. Be cool and help him out you assholes. anyway yeah one thing i forgot to mention is a Wah Pedal. Get a Wah System by Donlop for liek 600 dollars. Hook it up to any Dunlop Wah and it sounds awesome. Very cool stuff. although when it comes to that I cant help haha. its really hard. I have a friend who takes care of that stuff for me. He is really smart.

You really are an idiot. James Dean Bradfield has the same pickups, guitar and brand of amp (Marshall) as Slash but he sounds totaly different cause he uses a JCM2000 of some sort.

But I got a DSL401 and I get the Slash sound by putting the gain on full (optional) mid and treble at about 1 o'clock and the bass on full. Well that's how I get the Sweet Child O Mine sound
Mark Tremonti: I have my own mixer on stage so I can alter my volmes while on stage

Myles Kennedy: And why's that Mark?

Mark Tremonti:....I have trust issues with the sound guy

I do not see how this would get a slash sound personally. once you start turning the gain up to the point where it starts to sound grainy and saturated, it completely loses the slash sound.
