I am thinking of swapping my 3 way pup selector for a 5 way selector on my Strat. But I just installed new strings. Can I remove the scratchplate and do teh work by just detuning (slackening) the strings, without removing them? WOuld the scratchplate come off easily?

I loosened them all the way and removed the scratchplate.

Pain in the ass but it worked.

Same. After doing that once though, I've always taken the strings off. It's much easier.

well put it in perspective. 10-20 dollar strings vs possibly irrepairable damage to your guitar should they get in the way.

take the strings off. It's not to hard to restring a guitar, while wiring your guitar with the strings on is no easier

strings are not that expensive and should be changed regularly anyway. take them off.
