Right, Me and a mate have made a bet..

We tune our guitars through this program called AP Tuner.

Basically in standard tuning the notes are

E2, A2, D3, G3, B3, E4

In half a step he reckons you'd just have to right it like this

Eb, Ab, Db, Gb, Bb, Eb..

Which I don't think is right...

I think it should be like this

Eb2, G#2, C#3 ( I don't what comes next )

Who is right?

Also what comes afterwards G#2, C#3 etc etc ??

Eb, Ab, Db, Gb, Bb, Eb.. is correct for half-step down.

F, A#, D#, G#, C, F.. is half-step up.

Ab and G# are, in terms of pitch, the same. They're referred to differently when referring to music in different keys. However, when tuning a guitar, it doesn't matter what it's called as long as it's the right pitch/frequency.

Half-step down tuning is often written as Eb Ab Db... because it shows that it is a half-step flat from standard tuning, E A D...

You could write it as D# G# C#... but that just seems completely irrelevant at first.

The TS is always wrong.

Seriously though, you both appear to be right. Ab is G# and Db is C#.

Except this time when he appears to be right.

EDIT:
It's the numbers afterwards that are the important thing. Otherwise the program wouldn't know what octave the note should be.

yeah you are both right, the number (2) is just a reference to the octave of the note
I love my keyboardist, he's hot.

Didn't you learn that when you go down you flatten the note and when you go up you sharpen it? Your friend is right.

I think he's referring to needing the numbers for the program?
Otherwise then you're both right.
