Yes.

On a similar topic, who else gets angry when people that only learn Metallica covers call themselves "musicians"?

They're still making music so they are Musicians.
I will stand by all this drinking if it helps me through these days,
It takes a long time just to get this all straight.
#15
I wouldn't consider them musicians, since they are just using other peoples music and aren't creating it themselves.

Not saying they aren't talented, that vid was pretty legit.

Yes. Check out DJ Dopey and DJ Lethal. Two very talented DJs. Hell Dopey won the world tournament of DJing.

I dont really see DJ's as musicans becuase most of the time they are not CREATING music, but rather ALTERING music that as already been created, so no.

Some DJ's write thier own music in say, fruity loops, and then mix and alter, so yes, those types would be considerd musicans.

Thats just my opinion, its a debatable topic.

DJs essentially make a collage of music for you bastards to listen to. When an artist makes a collage of other people's photos, is s/he not still an artist?

And if they're turntablists, GTFO if you answered no.

do yourself a favour and check out DJ shadows album Endtroducing. Its in my top 10 albums of any genre.

Speaking as a DJ, it all depends. DJ Shadow is more of a producer than a DJ (he's decent but not spectacular) because he mixes different snippits from different songs to create a radically different song on record, while a DJ is just someone who is mixing between tracks in a creative way.

I don't think a proper DJ considers himself a musician while performing, but certainly while creating beats/songs in their studio like DJ Shadow. It takes a musical ear to be a good DJ, but not musicianship.

Good call, all I said above was about DJs who don't scratch at all. I do think DJs are artists, not musicians. Turntablists are definitely musicians.

Go program a synth that sounds decent for me and let me know how easy it was.

I just noticed your user title I'm a Limp Bizkit fan too.

Lethal got back with the guys from House of Pain and are playing under the new name of La Coka Nostra.

They use tools to make art with sound. That sounds like a musician to me.
#35
I do consider them musicians.

some people claim they only alter and manipulate other peoples music and not create their own yet you still call a cover band a group of musicians. Many DJs do infact make their own music
Alot of the stuff DJs do actually takes a lot of skill and practice

Yeah, that's exactly what music is about, work.

What the fuck does that mean? Why do you think that only a certain people can create a certain type of art? Ugh, you're not special because you have a skill set that helps you make music.

I'm gonna have to side with an old Teegman thread on this one, digital music is more accurate, and is music just like the kind made with any other set of tools.

ITT: People who don't know how hard DJing actually is.

A lot of DJs make their own music. If they don't make their own, they remix, and remixing is an artform in itself.

If you say DJing isn't musicianship, go ahead and try it yourself. I dare ya.
