hey, i have a question.

Ascending
E|--------------------------------7-8--|
B|---------------------------8-10------|
G|--------------------7-9-10-----------|
D|-------------7-9-10------------------|
A|------7-8-10-------------------------|
E|-8-10--------------------------------|

this is in the key of C. if i start the scale on let's say..on the 10th fret. will it be like a new key? in the key of D? i dont really get scales.

Here's an easier way to play the major scale, plus you can do lots of runs with it to build up speed. It's a bit easier to remember (C Major)

E|------------------------------------------------------10-12-13
B|------------------------------------------10-12-13------------
G|--------------------------------9-10-12------------------------
D|----------------------9-10-12----------------------------------
A|------------8-10-12--------------------------------------------
E|--8-10-12------------------------------------------------------

The starting note determines what scale you're playing (5th fret = A Major)

If you start this on the 5th string, it's the same thing except you just have to remember to shift on the B string

Ts, let's get this out of the way to clear up any further confusion.

The C major scale is just 7 notes. The shape has nothing to do with defining the scale, the shape only tells you where to find it, not what it actually is. These are the notes of C major.

C D E F G A B

those notes appear all over the fretboard, and anywhere you can find them you can play the C major scale. The shape you have is just one place on the guitar you can play them, so obviously if you move that exact same shape you'll be playing a different scale, because you'll be playing different notes.

In short, learn the notes on the fretboard, or at the very least on the low E to give you some form of reference to work things out and learn the other places you can play the scale.
