I'm trying to learn Greensleeves, this is really one of the first few songs that I've actually attempted to learn in 3+ years of dicking with the guitar, and the problem I'm running into is that I cannot seem to retain what I'm learning long enough to actually play it without looking at the music.

As long as I'm looking I can play it pretty much spot on, but as soon as I try to play it without the tab up I get lost about 6 notes in. So, I play it, looking at the music again and again, and still, as soon as I take my eyes off it falls out the back of my fat head.

If anyone has some type of ancient monk focus technique that will help me absorb this material please share with me. Thanks!

You don't know the song well enough - you need to commit the melody to memory before trying to actually play it.
