hey i was wondering when tony iommi does the solo for paranoid on the studio recording why is there all that fuzz in the background? does he use a distortion pedal or something?

Probably is pedal, to boost the tone.

You're better off asking questions like these in Musicans Talk.

Yeah, I think it's from the treble booster. You'll hear similar things in some of Brian May's solos.
