Ok, i have 2 links to custom guitar building forms, im looking to get a good guitar for speed/thrash metal! if you have a few minutes to spare, could you fill out the form and post your answers to each question here, im not very smart on the guitar parts side of things, i usually stay to the playing side, only 3 things that are a must.

1. Flying V design, King V or ESP V
2. guitar is Black colouring
3. Left Handed

If you don't know exactly what it is you want, there's no point you spending four grand+ on a custom made guitar.

At most, look at Carvin, as they'll give you a basic deisgn you can then configure to suit your needs better.
Yes, I know everything. No, I can't play worth a damn.

Not to mention won't drown you out of money.

I find Warmoth superior in the custom shop department, but considering you don't know much about guitar specs I highly doubt you'd be able to build one (They only deliver parts). Do look at Carvin though. Considerably, they're your best bet without spending worth a teenager's cash cow.

If you want to get a better idea of what makes a good guitar for whatever style of music you want, rather than ask for other people's opinions, the best thing to do is to just go to some shops and try out as many different guitars as you can find. Working out from experience what does and doesn't suit you is much better than anything anyone else can suggest to you.

I haven't checked your forms, but these are about the pickups, and most likely would mean a humbucker in the 1st and 2nd pickup slot. I'd guess there's also an '#SC' option?

Anyway, as said a million times before, filling out some forms for a custom guitar is fun and all, but shouldn't be done seriously if YOU are not serious about buying; which you are obviously not. By the time you'll have enough money (I think you said a few years?), you'll be wanting different things in a guitar. Heck, you might not even like to play only metal that much. You might be wanting to go into blues more, or jazz, or even freaking christian rock, for all I care.

You want to just relax, play lots of guitars, thinking 'Hmm, what do I like about this, and why?' and storing that in your memory. Then, one day, when you can and will buy a custom built guitar (which, if you do, I recommend to get done at a local luthier who you meet, talk and brainstorm with, instead of some money-guzzling firm like Jackson or ESP), you'll know exactly what you, and only you, want.

Also, why the heck are you trying to 'buy' a name for a metal band? Be creative, man...

In that case you really, really need to put in the time yourself to read up more on different guitars by yourself, and go and try many more out. If you don't even know what sort of pickup configeration you'd want, you're far too inexperienced to be worrying about what a good custom guitar would be for you or anything.

Absolutely not. Active pickups are highly specialised, and are only any good if you have a very specific type of amp and rig. As far as wood choice goes, again, it depends much more on what amp you use and what exact type of tone you're after and what your playing style is - lots of people in heavy metal use limba, basswood, ash, and even all-maple guitars.

IMO buying a custom guitar is just a waste of money. There are plenty of regular production guitars out there for far less that will perform just as good as any custom guitar. There is only so far you can take a guitar then it's just throwing away good money just to say I had my guitar custom made. Your best bet is to find a guitar that is already in production that meets your criteria.
