Hey

I currently have a Epiphone SG Standard,
-- > http://img3.musiciansfriend.com/dbase/pics/products/4/7/4/559474.jpg

I am thinking of changing the pick-ups just to change things up a lil.

As of now i am thinking of putting a P-90 in to the neck, something like this -->http://www.seymourduncan.com/products/electric/specialized/progressive/sph901_phat_cat/

For the bridge i would like some advice, i sorta wanna go something heavy/big. I want to get a nice heavy/bassy distortion out of my guitar.
Not really metally just 'big' distortion?

These are the ones im looking at right now for the bridge

Dimebucker SH-13

Vintage Alnico

and

Invader Sh

To be honest im somewhat new to this changing pick-ups etc.
I am aware that im going for 2 totally diff sounds here.

I sorta want that strat ish sound at the neck and a heavy distortion sound at the bridge, any help/ advice would be greatly appreciated

The dimebucker isn't any good; they put dime's name on it to make it seem awesome, when in all reality they're just compensating for bad design.

The invader can actually be /too/ hot. you have to be careful with the EQ or it will get real muddy real fast. I love this pickup, so long as I have a fair amount of mids/bass rolled off.

I would actually tell you to take a look at the Duncan JB. It's not quite as hot as a Dimebucker or an Invader, but it has a big, fairly warm tone to it when overdriven.

The Alnico II Pro (what you have listed as the "Vintage Alnico") is a good pickup that I, personally, like a lot. It sort of reminds me of a burstbucker, in a way.
Come to think of it, a burstbucker would be great. Burstbuckers are truly the one Gibson pickup worth owning. They have a big distorted sound, bu they're still very warm and very sweet.

Have a sizzlin' day,
AJ

EDIT: If you have any questions or you want more suggestions, feel free to shoot me a PM. =)

Thanks a lot.

I did some research on the Burstbuckers, found a few videos on youtube etc and im liking the sound of them. I think im convinced im gonna go with that. Will do a lil more digging though and see.

As for the P-90 i want to put in the neck pick-up, does anyone have any other suggestions?
Would i have to do any complicated wiring if i needed to put in the p-90?

Thanks

Wiring on a Phat Cat is dead simple. Single conductor with shield.

if i were you i would go with the gibson dirtyfingers it has a clear tone on clean and sounds like it was made for distortion.

I was playing with a dimarzio tone zone at the weekend and it fits the criteria you've set very well. I was also suprised by great the thing sounded clean, because the overdrive is why I tried the thing. It's cheaper than gibson pickups which are viewed as massively overpriced by most people. It was pretty much my perfect humbucker to be honest; the thing with distortion sounded unbelievable to me.

However, it was in an alder bodied, bolt on vigier. So the tone I heard, would be different from what it would sound like in yours. I still think it'd be awesome though. Check out the sound clips of it on the dimarzio site.

*this is mostly opinion so make sure you check it out before believing my every word *

i have burstbuckers in my epi sg and they're fantastic. they ARE pricey but i love 'em. a p-90 in the neck wont sound like a strat but then again, nothing will since you cant change the wood. that said, p-90s are fantastic and will give you a great tone

Thanks for all the advice.

I took a listen to all of them and right now ive been loving the dirtyfingers distortion and the dimarzio tone zone. More leaning towards dirtyfingers as they seem more what im looking for.

Yea the P-90 without a doubt im gonna get into the neck.

Im visiting Long & Mcquade tomm, im gonna see what they have to say and will decide.

Hey guys
So i put an order out for the phatcat p-90 and its on its way.

Now im just stuck on the bridge pick up.
I was talking to one of the sales people and they told me the dirtyfinger pick ups might get a lil muddy so im kinda leaning away from that.

However i came across another pickup,

Has anyone had the chance to try it out or has any input on it?

Duncan Distortion SH-6.

Awesome pickup. I'd buy an Alnico 8 magnet for it and swap the magnet, though, so the tone matches the Phat Cat better.

You CAN play anything with anything....but some guitars sound right for some things, and not for others. Single coils sound retarded for metal, though those who are apeshit about harpsichord probably beg to differ.
