I need to put together a list of songs for me to learn on bass from the last 10 years, appropriate to playing in bars/college bars. I know plenty of classic rock (I used to gig a long time ago as a guitar player), but I haven't been into it for the last decade and I need to know some of the "must know", popular bar music from the last decade or so.

pearl jam, alice in chains, nirvana, filter - hey man nice shot, tool - schism, smile empty soul - bottom of the bottle, blues traveler, and maybe some bush.

Epi LP Custom EMGs
ESP H-1000
Schecter Elite 7
Jackson Dominion
Peavey Valveking Head
Jet City JCA24s
Blackstar HT20 & HTV212
MXR Pedals
Schecter Stiletto Custom
Schecter Stiletto Studio
Fender Vintage Modified
Ampeg B2RE
Fender 4x10 Cab

Dream Theater.

But really, RATM, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, etc.
Unless you think Dream Theater is appropriate for a bar.

So:

Tool - "Schism" (not familiar, I'll have to look that up). Maybe "Sober' or "Prison Sex"?
Alice In Chains - Probably "Would"? What else maybe "Them Bones" or "Down in a Hole"
Pearl Jam - I'm guessing "Evenflo" and "Alive"
What Nirvana?
Stone Temple Pilots - Probably "Plush" and "Sex Type Thing"

I'll learn all that stuff, but it's mostly 90's. Anything from the 00's? I think I'll have to put Les Claypool on hold for a bit 'til the skills increase some

Jeremy or Garden would be cool for Pearl Jam (Don't play Even Flow, that song is extremely overplayed)
Don't play Smells Like Teen Spirit (same reason as Even Flow). What about something like Lithium, On A Plain, Heart Shaped Box, About A Girl (the original one) for Nirvana.
Don't know much from the other 3 bands though.
Also, another band could maybe be RATM? (minus the excessive cussing) Don't know if you want any more band suggestions though.
That's just my opinion.

my band covers that, great tune

to ts, some older green day would be good like she, when i come around or basket case, dave matthews is pretty good for bars, some blind melon, weezer, maybe some killers stuff, anything by the silversun pickups, and the tragically hip and blue rodeo are good but i'm not sure how many people outside of canada are familiar with them.

Overall, what The Humanity said + Nirvana = great coverage of 90s.

I hate to be the one to say this, but probably just about anything off of guitar hero 1,2, or 3 and rock band. Ugh...

You don't know how wrong that just made me feel

perfect Feeder songs would be Just a day,Buck Rogers, Just the way im feeling.Another band you should look at might be ash and their song Burn Baby Burn a lot of people know that and very possibly the song Kung Fu.

But i would say Nirvana,RHCP,Foo Fighters,Kings of Leon (early Molly's chambers etc),90's Green Day,Ash,Feeder,Franz Ferdinand(1st album especially take me out),Pearl Jam,Blink 182,RATM,Offspring,Weezer,Green Day.

Those would be some good picks as most of those bands have 1 well known or many well known ones which would be pretty suitable for this kinda thing even if you didnt know the words you tend to find people start singing along :P Also Whiskey in the Jar no matter what is perfect for bars aswell xD

Just about anything by the Manic Street Preachers is good, specificly You Stole the Sun from My Heart, Your Love Alone is not Enough, If you tolerate this, and A Design for Life which always always always goes down well in a bar.

Bullhonkey! Absolute bullhonkey! No freaking way. Fun as it is, GH has nothing in common with real guitar or bass. Maybe timing, but that's it.

TS, Parallel Universe by RHCP is really fun and quite simple.

IMHO

Radiohead - Airbag, Paranoid....
RHCP -
RATM - Take the Power back, bullet in the Head....
Megadeth - Symphony of Destruction
Manic Street Preachers - Motorcycle Emptiness, From Despair to Where
Green Day - Hits From Dookie
Pearl Jam - Black
Tool - Aenima (Schism is also not '90s)
White Zombie - Soul Crusher, Black Sunshine, Thunderkiss '65
Primus - Jerry Was a Race Car Driver, Tommy the Cat (But only if you played GH on Expert)

Hope this helps.....

Need suggestions for 00's mostly, as 90's are much more familiar to me, but suggestions from either are more than welcome.
