Which instrument do you think is usually the most inaudible in rock bands? I say bass guitar. I usually can't hear it unless the guitar's not there. Many other people I know say the same thing.

ACDCs rhythm guitar player is literally overshadowed..

Apart from that, every instrument SHOULD be audible, if the mix is right and the musicians know what they're doing.
#3
I'd agree with bass. It's one of the reasons I quit, because it was too hard for me to learn songs on bass while not being able to hear what's actually being played.
#4
Good bands make their bass audible. Crappy bands remove it or turn it down. See: Sex Pistols.

I wouldn't say that. Alot of bands rely on bass lines. I'd say bass is turned down in too many songs though.
#12
Keyboard is definitely what I notice the least, since it's mostly just ambient noises and I don't listen to a lot where it's very prominent.

tits on a whale?

i also agree with the man who said that all of them should be audible if its a good mix
#14
If you think bass is the least audible instrument, you need to listen to bands with better bass. The bass can really pull a song together.
#15
You can usually hear bass pretty good with a subwoofer but it's definitely over shadowed by everything else.
#17
They arent say it can't pull the music together, just that in gerneral that is the instrument that is less heard in the music.

I'd have to say bass guitar, because when I was in Best Buy the other day, some girl pointed at a bass guitar and asked an employee what it was.

I also did that upon reading his post, your not alone..

Also I agree - crappy bands turn down the bass. For example, AC/DC bassist just plays pretty much a backing to any of the guitar, so it sounds 'bigger', but you wouldn't even notice if they took out the bass...

But then if your talking about Rush - they'd suck dick without a bass.

Well, no they'd still be amazingly epic, but not AS amazingly epic.

lol I know but no amazing bass lines! Listen to Fly By Night and tell me it wouldn't be ruined by taking out the bass!

Bass, although Jimmy Page used to put JPJ way up in the mixes, and it shows. And I think Led Zeppelin's music is more enjoyable as a result.

Bass gets turned downed the most in modern rock music.

mainly because alot of the players don't know how to play,
they just follow the guitar.
and no-one wants to hear that.

Bring back real bass playing!
I love white guitars!

Anyone who says that the bass is useless has absolutely no understanding of the concept of sound and the sonic spectrum.

i dont think they are hard to hear at all. but i think you have to consider the frequency range of a bass and a guitar. the lower end in general tends to be harder to hear. i doubt rock bands actually turn the bass down. the guitar probably just sounds louder due to the frequency. a lot of guitar players use too much treble imo anyway.
