What does this mean?

dotted crochet = c.80

It is at the beginning of a piece. Thanks for any help.

yes. It means that the tempo is 80 Dotted Crotchets a minute.

This only occurs during the piece. the dot appears above or below the note.

I think the TS is talking about a crotchet with half it's own value added onto it.

at the beginning of any music if it has a note type and a number then that is the tempo. the c just means "approximately".

In this case it is telling you to play 80 dotted crotchets per minute.
