This is something one of the guitarists of my band sent me that the other guitarist had written. It just gets more and more impossible as it goes.... btw, the title is what he sent it to me as. I'm posting it just as he sent it to me; just thought you guys might enjoy it.

You know, I'm surprised to find myself saying this, but I really enjoyed that.

Still, there are a ton of problems with it. It doesn't always flow well, the rhythms can get pretty static and there a lot of really off notes in it.

Despite that, it was still really creative, and that solo was pure awesome.

Intro and Pre-verse were strange but sounded cool. Drum work is nice, especially bars 20-21 were well placed.
Other that that, your rythm and timing is pretty much f*cked up. The whole structure in the begging just makes no sense.
Lick at bars 80-103 were awesome but after while it got a bit annoying. Make it a bit more different at bar 96 to keep it exciting.

Holy **** that's one strange song but I'm enjoying right now, although it sounds like some underground grindcore.

The other guitarist definitely was on drugs writing this, the most wicked song I've seen on here

i lol'd at the ridiculous slides and excessive whammy bar usage xD
Hey, I never said it was possible to play, although the whammying could be done with a pedal, although I doubt anyone's that good with one.

im not saying you did, im just saying it sounded like there were banana peel slips and falling of cartoon characters everywhere :P

Well the whammying is pretty random, so it's not like you'd have to be all that precise about it

And the sliding bit isn't nearly as tough as you think. However, I certainly don't envy the bass player. Playing that riff that many times is bound to tear off a great deal of skin.

I AM the bands bass player.
I don't know if we're actually supposed to play that, or if he was just bored; we're actually a punk band, so I don't see much resemblance....

A little update: I just talked to him about it over Myspace; he says all the insane whammying was inspired by the solo to We're Not Gonna Take It. He's not done with the song either; he said he's aiming for 500 bars. He was asking me my opinion on doing a kind of orchestra-style breakdown; personally, I think it sounds like a cool idea. Your thoughts?

is this going to be a real song?!

The band would have to be really successful and have a lot of money to be able to do it, but if we could, it would be kick-ass, especially considering we're a punk band; imagine our fanbase (assuming we'd have one)'s surprise! Btw, he just sent me the update. He says that because he's been working on it for about a week, he's used to it, so it all sounds familiar; he wants to know if anything sounds like it's plagurized, because he listens to music while he works on it to get ideas, so he wants to make sure he didn't steal anything without meaning to. Here's the update:

my ears.

some of the soloing was actually kinda painful to listen to.

I can't tell if he knows an assload of theory or none at all...

Yeah, I have fond memories as a child of fapping to a porno with my close friends before sitting down for a nice relaxing evening of Runescape.

Bars 205-215 and 223-234 sound exactly like "Soil" by System of a Down.

Quite possible; he has a System of a Down CD, I think it's Mesmerize. I'll have to look into it.

Edit: No, wait, it's Hypnotize.

I really couldn't listen to it after a while man. The song gets EXTREMELY repetitive at one point. It needs a lot of work. The solo's weren't too great either. And I really don't feel a punk vibe to it at all. Sounds more of like a jam band or a rock band.

Sorry if Im being a little harsh man. No hard feelings or anything. Just being honest.

If you have time, I'd really appreciate a review of my deathcore bands' EP. Thanks

I thought it sounded clunky and dull. Simple powers chords with boring drums and bass. Out of key and repetitive alot of the time. Impossible tremolo parts.

The melodies had no exciting diversity. Felt rushed and monotonous. The solos had potential but ended up falling flat.

The main solo is probably the highlight of the song as it is actually pretty good. This is the main reason I even bothered to critique it.

Overall the drums and bass were boring and the song got pretty ridiculous at bar 108. Bar 175 is pretty much impossible. As is bar 179, also it doesn't fit at all. From bar 108 the song just falls apart, boring, repetitive, clunky solos that don't seem to work at all. The solos seemed rushed and lazy from that point on.

Bar 252 didn't fit with the song at all.

Bar 269 just sounded awful... Honestly terrible

Bar 302 and 305... Wtf?

309 onwards just sucks horribly... It just doesn't even seem like a song from there onwards.

Horrible mess of a song. 2/10

Oh sorry I didn't realise there was an update. He somehow suceeded in making the song worse. Not only does the last part not fit at all into the song but the harmonies are terrible. I was scared of the horrible sound.

He is trying too hard to make an epic 80 minute long song but unfortunately he doesn't know enough about key signatures, pacing, structure, progression, melody or rhythm to form even a coherently structured form of music. He should take some lessons in songwriting and attempt this song again. Sorry if I seem to be being harsh but if no-one tells him straight then what's the point of offering criticism?

My advice would be to step away from the song for a while. Cut parts out and keep in key. Maybe take some guitar lessons in theory or look it up on the internet. If he is deliberately going out of key then tell him to stop because it sounds terrible. Also, if he really wants to sound strange then there's a way of doing it without going out of key... It's called the harmonic minor scale and it's perfect for unusual sounding riffs.
