Alright I'm looking for a 2x12 cabinet still. I'm willing to go used and i have no budget. It can be anything as long as it's not over $1000 USD. I play a lot of metal, and have a Marshall 1960Lead but I think there is better out there. My amp is a Randall RM100. I want a 2x12 so i can get a better speaker break up sooner. Anyone have any opinions.

Well... if you want earlier speaker breakup, you can replace the speakers in the 1960 with G12H30s which would give you less power handling. I don't know how many watts the RM100 can put out at peak output but as long as you aren't cranking the amp, you should be fine. "100 watts" is not equal amongst all amps.

Dunno how much speaker breakup is going to help for a good metal sound, if you're using a lot of gain, speaker breakup might just muddy up your sound and cause your low end to fall apart a little.

Doesn't speaker breakup usually make the sound clearer?

No, it adds more distortion.

It's a desired effect for certain classic rock sounds, but generally, not so much desired in cases where a lot of preamp distortion is used (like in most metal)

For home i'd get a 1x12, but that's just me.
If you want a seperate cab, then i'd look up Avatar or Vader since they custom make your cabinets and you can pretty much put in any speaker you want.

For a 2x12, i'd say minimum 30ish-60 watts, unless you crank it all the way at home...
#11
Actually i do crank it at home . I live a bit more spread out then most houses on my block and my parents don't mind since it is sound proofed down here. I can get my pre and master at about 2-3 o clock after that, it just starts to hurt my ears even though it doesn't get too much louder, just clearer.

I've looked into Avatar and Vader. Vader sounds pretty good for more of the metal aspect. Any more advices anyone?

ENGL, Orange, Mesa, Splawn, Diezel, Saxon cabs, Mills Acoustics...

I'd get an ENGL if i didn't get a Vader/Avatar, but that's me.

-Silvertone Kentucky Blue
-MXR CC Delay
-Ibanez TS-9
-Egnater Rebel 20
-Avatar 1x12

Would a G12K-100 and a Greenback be ok if i were to overdrive cause the G12K is has a much higher speaker rating than the Greenback.

from what i understand, you can only rate a cabinet as high as the lowest wattage speaker.
but i could be wrong.
but if i'm correct, getting your amp really loud wouldn't work so well with the greenback being only 25w

Damn it, knew i should have kept my 50watt!

Would have made things a bit easier as i really want greenbacks.

yeah celestions sound great, but tend to be very low wattage (for the more popular speakers... some g12s, greenbacks, blue, gold, v30)
i have the vintage 30s in a 4x12 and i love them.
unfortunately to really get the nice sounding greenbacks or similar speakers with high wattage amps is to have a 4x12 so the wattage handling capability is at it's highest.
#19
Greenbacks have a very loose and flabby low end if you can deal with that. I dunno how well they're going to work well for metal. The G12H30s have a little more oomph and are more balanced all around.

If you're absolutely convinced that you want Greenbacks, look at Weber's Stan Spec speakers or Scumbuck's M75s. Better than the Celestion reissues and can come with higher power handling. I would not go with any less than 150 watts personally.

yeah for a 100w head, 150w would be ideal.
lower wattages are doable but without an attenuator you risk over powering your speakers.

So I'm limited to G12K-100s and G12t-75s. Any others? I'm gonna go by what you guys say and keep it above 150w.

are you determined to get celestions?
they;re great speakers and i swear by them (along with jenson) but for metal, i don't know if they'd be my first choice.

no you are not...

there are more speakers out there than Celestion, Weber and Scumback make clones of vintage Celestions that are probably the best on the market, arguably better than the Celestion Heritage series and they come with different power handling options. Or you you might even like vintage 30s.

I've never really hear eminence speakers. So i can't really go by them. Any people recommend around here.

I just listened to the Texas Heat and Man O War. On Eminence's website. I wasn't impressed but it could be that they just did poor recordings.

i've never been big on eminence speakers, but that's just me.
lots of people love them.
you should go to guitar center one day and test out all the eminence cabs, and i'll bet there's a few of their speakers you'll really like

Wow i just stumbled upon freda cabs. It's not so much i like their cabs but their sound clip range is intense. Check it out for all you guys looking for sound clips of speakers with the same riff.

Edit: Ok i think i got what i want now. I might go for a Weber Thames and a Texas Heat. I hope they are around the same db range. Also the Thames is 80w and the Texas is 150w. Would this work for a 100w amp?

it might, but it will probably need an attenuator to keep the amp from pushing all its power through the speakers.
i'm not great with speaker wiring, but there may be a way to wire them so it pushes more power to the 150w speaker than the 80w. i doubt it ho, and that's also not exactly a desirable audio method.
