For a shape to be considered a pentagram, does the star have to be upside down? I'm having a debate with a friend, thought I'd ask the pit

nope, the pentagram is just a 5 pointed star, penta being greek for 5. if it is upside down It is called an antagram to my understanding, but being an antagram still means it has 5 stars and is thus a pentagram :]

By the way, since he's obviously thinking of it as a symbol rather than just a shape, it generally has positive meanings pointing up, and negative meanings pointing down.

And the satanic pentagram has an extended point that points downward.

Pentagram is not a star. Pentagram is a polygon with 5 points (star has 10 points) and it is pentagram no matter how it's rotated, as long as it has 5 points.
The star is made of diagonals of a pentagram, connecting tow opposite points. So it doesn't have to be turned pointy-side down...

You're thinking of a pentagon dude.

A pentagram (sometimes known as a pentalpha or pentangle or, more formally, as a star pentagon) is the shape of a five-pointed star drawn with five straight strokes. The word pentagram comes from the Greek word πεντάγραμμον (pentagrammon), a noun form of πεντάγραμμος (pentagrammos) or πεντέγραμμος (pentegrammos), a word meaning roughly "five-lined" or "five lines".

Its actually physically impossible to be upside down because you can look at it a different way and it won't be upside down anymore

oops, I just found out that there's a difference between them in English
Either way, it's a geometrical shape, it doesn't have the right or the wrong side...

i think it has to be circled to be a satanic symbol, though

This.

It just has to have 5 points.

pentagram with a point "upwards" and circled = symbol for wiccan religion

pentagram with a point "downwards" = satanism

it needs 5 to be a pentagram
pent = 5
gram= star shape
ex.
pentagon = 5 sided box

No. The circle doesn't change the meaning. It makes it a pentacle instead of a pentagram. Upward is (usually) for Wicca, and downward is (usually) for Satanism. There are other religions that use pentagrams/cles, but it's usually those two.
