if someone were to walk up to you and ask you to describe/define what art is because they had no idea what it was, how would you describe/define art.

i would respond to that with "anything beautiful" but I'm curious to see what other people think art is.

Art is expression, doesn't matter how you express it or what you express.

CREATIVE expression.

I could express hatred by hitting someone, it wouldn't really be art.

expressing hatred by hitting someone could be a form of art.

Really though I beleive that as long as your expressing something, its a form of art.

is he recording the event in some way? be it written as a memoir, captured as a picture or recorded as sound or a video?

actually, it doesn't matter, not all music is recorded and not all art captured for future use.

so technically, it is art. ^ is correct

Ever heard of pugilism?

Sports is art for the eyes.

Art isn't something that has to be save and compressed into a file for later usage.

Something aesthetically pleasing, if it catches my eye, it's art. But really, anything can be art, I went to an art gallery in New York this summer and there was a piece which was half of a chair broken and lying on the floor. Some art I don't get, but you sit me down in the french impressionist room of the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, I could look at paintings for days.

I think anything that the creator did to express himself is considered art.

Art is only art when its expressed. There's much more under the surface. There's meaning, feeling, experiences etc.

Art is the process or product of deliberately arranging elements in a way that appeals to the senses or emotions. It encompasses a diverse range of human activities, creations, and modes of expression, including music, literature, film, sculpture, and paintings. The meaning of art is explored in a branch of philosophy known as aesthetics.

To the creative/expression people: Dalí painted just whatever 'cause it was his job. He sold his shzit for big time prices.

Constant definition by teachers (literature, painting class, etc): Communicate a message without words. Needs to be done by a famous guy that has studied, killed himself reading, has taken classes in order to be valuable.

Expressing feelings so that they can be sensed, most artists have something to get off their chest.

Art doesn't necessarily have to be expressive, or beautiful. Notice, however, that I'm shying away from giving any definition.
This question has troubled artists and philosophers for thousands of years, and will continue to do so. I think most people have their own ideas about art, which can seem very clear in their mind, but can be very difficult to put into words.

^I think that's an idiotic view. Dali may have earned his money by painting, but it doesn't mean he didn't love painting. Art is a notoriously difficult field to make a living in, and had Dali loathed painting, he could have easily made a living doing something else: I don't doubt that he was a very intelligent and driven man, it shows in his art.

Dali didn't just automatically get where he was, he had to work at it, he didn't just make paintings either.

Just because something isn't valuable dosen't mean it isn't art, a majority of stuff on my computer is downloaded, so the value on it is squat, but i still think it is fantastic and cathartic.
