First off, today is my 18th birthday (what did you get me, bitches?!)

Second, I was thinking earlier about the drinking age in england being 18, and after some brief research, I realized that the United States has one of the highest drinking ages in the world...
why?

We seem to get off on calling ourselves the land of opportunity and whatnot, so why are we reluctant to have a low drinking age?

MY POINT: should the US lower the drinking age from 21 to 18? don't hesitate to share your opinions.

also, happy birthday me

Yeah I never had a hard time getting booze before I turned 21.

well, I'm not from the us, but the law-system doesn't really sound that logical to me

like rabidguitarist said, maybe they should sort out the gunlaws out first..

I don't get why drinking from when you turn 18 is such an issue, if the us has a gigantic number of deaths by gun-violence..

here in the netherlands, you can drink from when your 16, but you have to admit, we have a pretty low number of accidents while under the influence of alcohol, sure, the youth can sometimes have the tendencie to drink way to much, and to get behind the steering wheel with a few beers to many in their blood circulation, but the police here does a pretty great job off making sure not too many accidents occure..

so to put it short..

yes, the US should lower drinking age, BUT, they also have to do something about the rest of their law-system, cause just lowering the drinking age isn't gonna help the country, in my opinion the US should just try an approach like they use in some off the countries that don't have high accident-rates from driving under influence, in other words, just take an example off people who do it better

I'm pretty sure this has been discussed to death. And if you have any 21 year old friends, just get booze off them. Simple.

It makes no difference, alcohol is alcohol. You just end up waking feeling **** in the morning and people in UK drink at the age of around 15 and 14 and make a big deal out of it but theres no point in that. They are 14, out in a cold field in freezing cold and wet weather all sharing one bottle of beer between them. Might aswell wait until your age and drink properly in a pub.
#13
They will probably change the age to 18 in 2011. Just cause that's when i turn 21

its going to be funny when your wife and daughter are being raped and beaten because you have nothing to defend yourselves with against the criminals. i bet you will still be laughing to yourself about how "ridicules" the usa's gun laws are then eh?

^^^ hahaha epic win. but srsly most of our gun deaths are caused by handguns, which are limited to 21 and over, not long rifles.

and this thread isn't "waa im 18 and i want to be able to drink"
i know as well as any how easy it is to get alcohol haha

Because if guns were banned, crime would dramatically increase, and random people would break into your house every day.

Jesus, I didn't know my own countrymen were so paranoid.

im not paranoid. people get home invaded, mugged, randomly attacked everyday. criminals almost never use legal weapons. and i didnt say crime would go up. i said its going to funny/ironic if he ever gets into a situation where he needs to defend himself against bad people with guns and he has nothing but a small knife and maybe a blunt object., because hes going to be thinking **** i need a gun or a miracle.

Oh and if 'bad guys' come to your house to rape your family (...'cause that's how that **** happens :p) and they've got you at gunpoint, having a gun yourself isn't necessarily going to help you... it might, sure, just saying that the 'bad guys' might be more inclined to shoot your ass if you've got a gun too :p Ah well, depends entirely on the situation I suppose.

Perhaps he'll go rape this guy's family as a sort of inversion of poetic justice if guns are banned?

In Australia the vast majority of teenagers drink before the age of 18. I'm sure it's the same in America - see I don't think it's the laws that need to be changed, but rather the attitudes towards drinking (as individuals and a society) for the problems associated with it to be reduced.
#31
ive been drinking since the age of 3 years old lol.and these laws you speak of have not affected me in anyway

You didn't back up your argument with a valid statement, in fact, most of your post wasn't even actual words. Therefore I'm not obligated to back my argument up, I'm just going to sit here and laugh at you.

yes it does depend on the situation entirely. what im TRYING to point out is that making guns totally illegal like that oh so smart person that called me a hillbilly seems to think the world should do isnt going to stop rapist and murders and criminals in general from putting a gun against the back of your head or using it to hurt people. and by alteast being allowed to own a gun you MIGHT have a BETTER chance of defending yourself. i dont know about the majority of people out there but i feel much safer knowing that i have some guns so that if the unlikely chance that someone comes into my house and try's to hurt me and my family i can atleast have a fighting chance. instead of crying and begging on my knees like a little bitch. but thats just me. it seems to be in this bizarre new world we live in that only certain people are allowed their rights and opinions while the rest are just kind of their to fill up space and make that small few people feae special. but thats just my opinion and should be treated as such, instead of being mocked and ridiculed =P

I'd actually vote for the age of alcohol in the UK to go up from 18 to 21.

Cigarettes should definitely go up to 21 if they're not going to ban them, though it's only just gone up from 16.

It would be interesting to compare the rates of underage drinking in various nations with different legal age limits.
#40
ok, so why did someone bring up gun laws when the thread is not about gun laws at all? that's completely off the subject and has no effect on the drinking laws. whoever asked is just a prick wanting to start an argument about something irrelevant.

anyway, the reason the drinking age in the US is so high is because a long while back they tried lowering it to 19, but the amount of drunk kids out driving and getting into trouble dramatically increased. so of course, they raised it back up to 21.

and they won't be lowering it any time soon even if it would be more correct is because they don't want something like that to happen again, and even though it's not stopping kids from drinking, at least it gives a good reason to be careful.

I mean, I'm 19 and it would be nice to buy myself a drink whenever I feel like it, but I understand and agree with the reason it's like that. So I'm content to get my older friends to buy it for me for a couple more years.
