so my dad told me that he would get me a 1500 USD guitar if i play 5 songs in front of his friends...thats not the problem, they have to be ballads, like songs normal people listen to, i can play behemoths conquer all and some kind of difficult songs so skill level isnt an issue, i just need like ballads and popular music preferably no rock...i was thinking about beatles guitar oreitned songs, but i dont know of any(not a beatle fan) i already learned a song called "coincidir" and my dad said he would like other mexican songs, since were mexicans, but i told him tabs were a prob, so he said that ballads everybody could hum to were ok.

Im thinking of getting a 7 string, either a jeff loomis 7, the ibanez rg 7 or an agile hornet pro(which is the one im leaning towards cuz of the V shape)

if u havent guessed it by now, i need songs to play that feet into ballad, soft rock and mexican music genre...

BTW my finger picking skills arent that great

Two songs in spanish that I like to play are "Guantanmerra" and "De Colores". If you can carry a tune at all, these are pretty easy songs.

buy one of those rockschool grade books the grade 6 one should be enough to sound impressive without making you have to sit and learn them fo days
or you could learn the phrygian mode and write your own spanish themed song
possibly something bon jovi? not necesarrily livin' on a prayer
always is a good ballad

I'd say:
1. Cancion del Mariachi (Morena de Mi Corazon) by Los Lobos. It's a great song. Listen to it.
2. In Loving Memory Of by Alter Bridge. One beautiful song.
3. Regret Not (just don't use crushing overdrive on the metal part. It sounds good clean.) by All That Remains. Sounds great clean and dirty, but I'd suggest clean in this setting.
4. Sweet Home Alabama by Lynyrd Skynyrd. Your dad likes that song. I promise you that, and I don't even know who he is.
5. Swing Life Away by Rise Against. Cool strumming patterns and it sounds really nice.
#11
Try Lord of the Rings by Blind Guardian, even though they're a metal band that song is pretty much straight folk plus it's a blast to play.
#12
1. Heaven - Los Lonely Boys (that should impress him)
2. Dust In The Wind - Kansas
3. I can't tell you why - Eagles
4. Every rose has it's thorn - Poison
5. Brown Eyed Girl - Van Morrison - Very cool and fun song to play.
6. My Girl - Temptations

That should be a good start..

And Check Out Ernie Ball MusicMan Guitars. VERY sweet stuff...

dude, if my dad (hell, anyone) said he'd buy me a $1500 guitar just for playing a few songs for him, you bet your A** I'll do it..

And I can see the logic behind the request as well. He's researching his investment to make sure it's worthwhile. To see that his kid isn't just being spoiled, that he really deserves a nice guitar. Completely logical. I like his dad...

You're a dick. OP said "ballads, like songs normal people listen to", so I'm assuming he meant it in a "rock ballad" genre.

Actually, he did say it as in a "rock ballad" genre.
i need songs to play that feet into ballad, soft rock and mexican music genre

So why don't you call the OP an idiot before calling me one?

If you don't mind the neck, the Jeff Loomis signature is the best one out of those. If you really, really need a 7-string V then take the Hornet.

Seriously, broaden your horizons. Find out what bands/guitarists your dad likes or listened too growing up and learn their songs. For instance, my dad listens to all the bands I just listed too, so do I, so I can easily impress him. Hell, out of those songs (Mainly the 60s stuff) if your dad knows them, play the easy ones. It's 5 songs right? Choose the easiest ones which usually happens to be blues.

Europa by Santana = Epic listenable guitar song. Gary Moore has great songs too, and that's as far as I would go on showing skills. Play something like "Still Got the Blues", or his cover of "The messiah will come again".

The song from "El mariachi" is great. (someone mentioned it above)

You could learn some classical song just to be cool, like the first part of "Asturias-Leyenda" by Isaac Albeniz. It's probably gonna be hard because you say you can't fingerpick well, but with practice you'll have it in like a week. "Concierto de Aranjuez" is another option. Something by Paco de Lucia could be good too (entre dos aguas, chanela, rio ancho, la niña de puerta oscura), but you will need a rythm guitarrist and a lot of practice.

And play a ranchera song. Something by Vicente Fernandez or Jose Alfredo Jimenez. They are, on most times, just the same chords over and over, but every 40-something mexican has heard it and they are kinda nice songs.

Hotel california is a nice choice too, just dont play the whole solos because the guys could get bored (most non-guitarrists wont remember the solo completely). Same with "sweet home alabama", "free bird", or any other rock ballad mentioned above.

Those are some songs I would play If my dad told me something like that. I'm mexican too, so I kinda know what a mexican dad would like to hear.

Mexican(and latin amercan) popular music isn't the same that on north america. Our paren't grew in different musical backgrounds than the north americans, playing ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd, or Hendrix or something wont impress his dad the way that "El rey" would. My parent's still think i cant play because i haven't played a classic mexican song by Jose Alfredo Jimenez or Oscar Chavez or someone like that. When I play Paul Gilbert or Megadeth they are like "play some real music".

I'm not sure about Spanish music but if you want some hard licks play some Joe Maphis. Not everyone knows about him but he is very impressive.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oi4W3qH4xxs

Oh and another piece of advice: Most music takes time to appreciate. I'm not saying this just to you, This goes to anyone. If you don't like it the first time listen again and again. Without this rule I would have a very small music collection and wouldn't have bothered with great bands like The B-52's, Nirvana and The New Pornographers. I'm glad I found this out.
Always tin your strings.
