My band is writing a Spanish-style song and i'm trying to find a nice acoustic riff to kick it off. I want the progression to be like that traditional Spanish E D E F G F E progression, and i'm having trouble finding a D chord that has a Spanish feel to it. Any suggestions?

i've always found that if you hook your thumb on the 2nd fret of the low E, the whole thing sounds a lot more spanish.

That does sound pretty good, but my problem is when i go to the D chord it sounds higher than the E, which i don't want.

you can always bar the D, btu then you wont get your spanish sound. sometimes, if you play it right, a barred D-minor can sound pretty good in a spanish song.
