1. What genres do you play?
2. What is your max budget?
3. Will you be gigging or just home use?
4. Do you mind buying used?
5. What gear do you plan on using with it?

Answer these in paragraph form, detailing the exact circumstance that leads to you looking for a new amp. Basically those are both poor choices, so I want some more info so I can make a better recommendation for you.

Not the 212. I owned a 212 DSP for about a couple days. Actually two. When I took the first one home, its speakers blew out before I had a chance to play anything on the guitar (volume on 2, plug in guitar, turn it on, BAAM!!!!!). anyway, after owning the second one a couple days, I just didn't like the sound I got (it was very flat and surprisingly my distortion pedal worked better with the VOX than the 212). The vox also has a better variety of sound (many amp modes to choose from).

I'd pick the Vox over the 212 any day of the week unless you have an extensive pedalboard and need more than 30 watts of power.

correction 70 watts of power also one question does the amp take pedals well?

Don't get a DS-1, and get a cheap tube amp and crank it for punk.

example of a cheap tube amp don't say epiphone valve junior

Fender builds some nicer higher end amps.
However a Vox will completely destroy a Fender Frontman. Not only is the Fender sound inferior.......but the Vox actually has a few Fender amp models built in and they sound GREAT.

your user name is incorrect.

but just so this isnt spam, id definately go for the vox due ot the obvious sucking tone and bad quality control of the recent frontman amps.

I dunno for punk what you really want is a 5-15 watt tube amp that you can crank up a good bit and get some nice overdrive. The entire basis of punk is built around this sound. Since you said no Valve Juniors, which would be low on my list anyway, I'll say;

Blackheart - Killer Ant/Little Giant/Handsome Devil
Fender - Blues Junior
Vox - AC4TV (I think this is probably your best bet, for your genres.)
Blackstar - HT5

You probably will have to save a bit more for any of these, but I guarantee you will regret it if you don't.

Also about wattage/volume; don't get sucked into thinking you need 50+ watts. With tube amps anything over 5 watts can keep up with drums just fine. The only sacrifice you make is no headroom, but for what you want to do headroom is rarely an issue, since power tube OD is so desirable. I think 15 watts is your ideal, but given your low budget, 5 watts will definitely be enough.

the REAL punk bands (sex pistols, the clash, ramones) used Fender Twins and other loud fairly expensive american tube amps.

pop punk bands like greenday seem to use slightly more metal oriented amps. Blink 182 use a mesa/boogie and a JCM800, greenday have a couple of plexi's i think.

you definately want something to model these tones, and the valvetronix amps do it well.

SS - Anything with power tube saturation will play punk. Amps with no power tubes don't have power tube saturation.

TS - Do you want to model the tones your after, or actually have them?

check out the blackheart group, theres a link to it on WTF!!'s profile in the groups section, i havent joined yet.

or go to www.blackhearteng.com

or just search youtube. Peoguitarshop have some demos.

or i can just tell you. all-tube vintage tone amps that love being cranked, that dont empty your bank account. and are reputed to be built like tanks. mine has already had cola spilled on it, but it seems fine.

the difference between the killer ant and the valve jr is that the VJ is 5 watts and the KA is 0.75w.

For what you want to do, I would not be afraid of the Killer Ant. I have more amps then I need now, but I still want one, just because they are such a cool idea. Don't expect cleans from it, but I'm willing to bet it is decently loud, and the break-up is probably heavenly.

If you can't tell I haven't played this amp, I suggest you find one and play it.

the power amp saturation in the KA is actually coming from a Preamp tube.

the amp doesnt have any other tubes in it, the 2x12Ax7s in the amp head drive the pre and power amp sections. how cool is that?

Actually, I'm not joking around.

Considering Greg Ginn and Lyle Preslar both did it, its not unheard of for hardcore punk. The harsh clipping and fuzzy sound is practically a staple of it.
