I own a 2005 american strat with stock pickups
I'm wondering if I could do anything to bring out the distorted sounds little better
I don't need it to sound like a les paul but just a little more punch

I'm thinking about upgrading the pickups to EMG DG-20 those are active pickups and should sound a little brighter

I'm not sure what pickups came with my guitar the headstock says "custom shop" so I'm guessing my strat came with fender cs54 or cs69 ...how can I tell ?

any suggestions welcome

I probably wouldn't go as far as EMGs if you're just looking for just a 'little more punch', though maybe I misunderstood how you meant that. I hear Texas Specials are pretty good as far as slightly hotter than usual strat pickups are concerned.

hot rails are usually a good choice
Gibson SG Standard
Epiphone Les Paul Custom

If you look under the pickup cover you can see the wire. The 54 has orange wire. The 69 has black wire.

knowing what you have in there will do a lot to indicate what you might need.
