heres the skinny. Im in a contest to build a guitar from Homedepot or similar store parts and as cheaply as possible...

her eis the story...

-Ok, a 7 string is a must.
-I will probably make my own Saddle out of scrap metal. Dunno if i will make it a one piece, non adjustable, or just bolt down individual saddles to the body.
-PINE NECK-THROUGH with POPLAR wings...
-Body shape will look like this.. minus the german carve...

-Integrated Fuzz circuit and whatever pickups i can find.

Here is the updated vision....

=============
DAY 2
============
these are thei pickups i migh tbe installing. don't know for sure yet...

alos did a bunch of sawing and gluing today...

body wood. Im going to glue those pieces together before i cut them again...

here is a better pic of the grain on th epine. The neck is going to have that grain on either die, with the normal looking piece in the center... I think the neck is going to look sweet.

The stack, with an extra piece...

here is the "Back" of the neck...

Why not get something more suitable for the neck. Get those Maple bookcase shelves and do a 3-piece neck-through (MPM)!

Also, have you considered another oddly-shaped one like the Gretsch BilliyBo or the Fender JagStang?

#5
JAg stang isn't weird enough, and the Billybo isn't my style.

I honestly couldn't find any Maple that looked straight or suitable.

i serious thought the entire guitar was going to be maple when i was browsing home depot.

yeah, using the shelving is a great idea.

there will be no 8 string. there will be no hello kitty.

I played an Airline once and it was a REALLY fun guitar but i couldn't afford it at the time and it was black.

This is my opportunity to have a toy Airline to dink around with (at least until the neck snaps off).

I think im going to buy two of these weird tube pickups ans place them side by side at a slight angle and make a faux bucker...

http://www.wdmusic.com/split_tube_pickup_hot_black.html

so next week ill be ordering those and a truss rod, fret wire, fret saw, and maybe a Fretboard. Dunno what wood i want yet...

wait, are you sure the rules allow you to buy pickups elsewhere? like you dont have to wind your own with Home Depot items?

just makin sure so you don't disqualify yourself, haha.

that looks pretty nice.

and I know those pups are a bit longer, but are they gonna fit a 7 string? especially with the slight angle?

Why not just get one of the GFS ones? They're cheaper.

Also, awesome choice on body shape.

Dang, what about rail pickups?

They're usually wide enough, iirc.

Very cool project. one of the few guitars where it's easy to figure out where to put the 7th tuning peg.

also, that bass confuses me so much.
#29
i couldn't find any clamps and i didnt feel like going to the store to get more...

My neck is under there, and i pray that my Garage floor is level. :P

i also tested out my Block Plane just now. its kind of a pain, but it works....

#30
Make sure to put a lot of support in that neck. Pine is pretty weak, and without a good truss rod and probably carbon fiber rods, it's going to warp.

Looks awesome! Loving the oddness of it.
#37
NAw i have a 27" guitar being built for me righ tnow and it will be deliverd in JAnuary. I kinda want something different. Also, Ibanez has been making 7 strings @ 25.5" for decades, so i think i will be ok.

also, have you guys ever heard the expression, "measure twice, glue once"?

Well, its relevant because my neck isn't wide enough.

I then thought, "well, would i just make the scale longer and make it a Baritone 6 string?"
and i responded to myself, "NO! you are going to do it right the first time! no compromises..."

So im gluing the last board on there now. Im going to wait until tomorrow to do anything else. I also have to take a half inch of wood off the inside of the body wings now...

You're gonna want 27" for the scale length... That low B is gonna be floppy on 25.5

Naw, he just needs to make sure that his low B string is pretty thick, thick enough to handle B (Around .056).

Looking good, aside from the neck error!
#39
lol, my 6 string has strings for a 7 on it, 25.5" scale, i have a .059 on the top, down in A atm.

so it seems to work

i use d'adario reguler light 7 string on it, btw.

You deserved this, Matt.

Don't glue your truss rod to the channel! that defeats the entire purpose of a truss rod!
