if someone told you "hey, your guitar playing/singing" sounds just like *insert famous person here*, would it bother you? I mean because if someone says you sound like someone famous, it kinda robs you of your original voice/sound, doesn't it?
#3
people say my solos sound like angus youngs solos. i dont care. it doesnt affect me at all.
I'm not gay, a lot of people think I'm gay. I have a girlfriend, she thinks I'm gay.

I have to agree, it all depends on who they compare me to.

People say i sound like Corgan... I don't know whether to be insulted or honored. I love his voice, but... most people don't, so i don't know?

It would only bother me if they said everything I wrote sounds like that person.

I love you =] I can't say I was very fond of you when we first started talking because you trolled the hell out of my threads, but after talking to you here I've grown very attached to you.

Yeah, write to my fanclub about it, honey.

Is there something bad about being compared to someone who's really good and famous? Unless I sound like Michael Jackson and play like Slayer....
There be no shelter here.

I've not been told that I sound like someone, but upon showing my friends some of the music I listen to, they said they could hear where the influence comes from.

If I were compared to a guitarist that I admire, I would take it as a compliment. Right now, my guitar skillz suck, so originality is the last thing I should be worrying about.
#13
I'd be honored. Even if the artist sucked, they'd still be saying that I sounded good enough to be compared to someone they probably like.

That would be encouraging.

Almost everyone who hears my playing tells me I sound a lot like Mikael Akerfeldt. I generally take it as a compliment, but it does bother me a bit that I take so much influence from one person.

It was the only task I would undertake...

It depends if I want to sound like the person says I'm sounding like.

The surefire way to play something that doesn't sound like Mikael Akerfeldt is to play something really fast.

that's what people tell my sister when she starts singing, that she sounds like Gwen Stefani, even though she sings and writes in a completely different style. that's what inspired me for this thread. every time my sister sings, people comment on how she sounds just like gwen stefani. it's not horrible, because my sis likes Stefani, but still: always being reduced to a clone of a known celebrity sucks.

Touche. But as much as I love shred, my songs tend to come out very calm and emotional. So I guess I can see the influence.

People have told me I sing like Dylan. Maybe I should take it as an insult but I really like it.

I got told I sound like Simon Pegg, although that wasn't anything to do with music, and it kinda makes sense coz we are from the same area.

I really don't like it when people say "you don't play it how <insert artist here> does". Does it look like I'm <insert artist here>?

Sort of unrelated, but I almost lol'd the first time I read the NME. Everyone featured in it seems to get compared to at least two other artists, usually in the one sentence.

[Band X] has really changed their sound this album, with [Band Y]-esque [Instrument X] melodies and lyrics that could've come from the pen of [Famous singer/lyrcist X] when he was with [Band Z]

I've never been told who I sound like. The only thing anybody has mentioned to me about my playing is that I'm eclectic in my approach.

Eclectic... that sounds like electric!

I'm-a Z-Z-Z-ZAP you with my zany zounds!!

I don't sing or play an instrument anymore, I play basketball and write lyrics,

Sing like as in vocal style or lyrical style?

One can be an insult or a compliment, depending on your view, one is a downright amazing compliment

I've been told by family/friends that my guitar playing sounds like a mix of Clapton and Frusciante, I think this may be because that's what I grew up (and continue) listening to, among other things. As for bass, some sort of Flea-Jaco-Wooten inspired mix, I'm not sure about this..I like all three of those bassists, hell, they're heroes of mine, but I don't know if that's accurate...ah well.

If someone tells me I sound like x I usually take it as a compliment, because it would usually mean I sound professional, or something, I don't know. Depends who. If I ever hear 'Hey! You sound like Pete Wentz!' I'll hurt something..not because I'm a generic Fall Out Boy hater, I don't mind some of their music...but because next to no bass is ever heard..

TL;DR: Yeah, I don't really care what people say, though when most people say stuff about my playing, it's interesting to think about..
