Is it tacky to use a music stand during a small solo gig? Normally, I wouldn't, but I'm honestly terrible at memorizing any music.

EDIT: sitting on a stool with a guitar

If it helps you out and makes the overall performance better, fuck what everyone else thinks.

Live shows are entertainment for the audience, in every sense

It depends on what instrument your playing. If its a piano, it looks fine but if your standing on stage singing with sheet music in your hand it looks a little unprofessional.

I did once because I had to play a Bon Iver song that I had just learned that same day. I felt like a tool.

If you can memorize it, do it.

But I agree with happytime harry... whatever will make you perform best

The ones that truly appreciate you trying to give your best performance to them, regardless of how you actually look on stage are the ones worth playing for. I don't care how it looks, so long as it sounds good.

TS, if you're really worried about it, still use your stool and stand, but set up a fog machine beside you.

Disguise it so it blends in with the stage and looks like a floating music book to freak everyone out.

That's be awesome

Do something like this, only with a music stand:

Alright, all I was trying to say was that a live show encompasses both aural and visual aspects.

But you're right, it depends on the person.

Personally, I wouldnt pay to see an artist just for listening to their music. Thats why I have good-quality headphones and studio tracks. I like some eye-candy to make the $40 bucks I payed worth it

Oh I know man, there's a middle ground. I like a show with pizazz as well. The only thing is I don't like it when they're more worried about the stage setup and lighting than actually performing the music. The latter should always be the first priority imo.

I saw the Bloodhound Gang and Jimmy Pop had lyrics taped to the floor.

You'll be fine with a music stand. People would rather see you sit there with a stand than have you mess up a bunch of times.

Hell, Rivers Cuomo was holding lyrics to a song he wrong 13 years ago.

I realize you are talking about the actual music, and not lyrics, but its the same idea.
