I went to Long and McQuade today looking for a pack of 5 EB heavy guage power slinkies, but they didn't have any. so the only other set of heavy guage 5 strings were nickel wound d'addarios. i've never had them before, so i didnt know what to expect. there on my bass now. and they sound too punchy and definately too trebley (even if i turn the treble to zero and play by the neck)... is this just cuz theyre new and not broken in, or is that what these are meant to sound like?

I always hate the sound of new strings, give 'em a week. You'll A.) get used to them and B.) they'll stop sounding "tinny".

alright nice. yes its a very "tinny" sound. kind of irritating. i'll just play the **** out of them for the next week and hopefully they mellow out a bit.

We must have different taste in string tone then, because I got EXL190s and I fell in love with them immediately when I put them on my bass. What kind of music do you play, and how does that Yamaha sound?
Only play what you hear. If you don’t hear anything, don’t play anything.

My Nickelwounds were inredibly trebly for my first week, kind of like a ric on crack. They'll mellow out seen.

i play metal. with the stock strings (which i had on before the string change) my yammie gave me a good mix of punch and warmth (not as much warmth as i wanted though). it gave me a nice clack when EQ'd right.
