There are two for under $1000 that I would consider:

Gibson SG Classic with P-90s: this will give you a single coil sound with a fatter tone than a Fender Strat.

Gibson SG Special: Classic SG with Humbucker sound, very versatile.

Try them both, and pick out the one that you like the most.

You should look into used ones too. The way I see it is your going to "use" it anyways, so you might as well save the extra money.

the faded is pretty good, and it leaves you 300 bucks for upgrades!

I'd say the Faded. Most people swap out the neck pickup for a '57 and leave the bridge because it's a pretty decent pickup.

The pup swap would probably cost $75 or so...
