my girlfriends computer just got infected with a trojan, a worm, and something else.
she told me something about its trying to steal her info or something. im not very good at computers let alone when i cant see the computer itself (she lives a few states away from me at the moment)

and she cant afford much, its harder to get a job where she is then it is where i am (and ive been searching a long time for a job) so i offered to pay for a antivirus software for her computer, seeing that she's having problems with money.

so pit, what kinda virus protection do you use on your computers?
and what seems to work best?

and yes i know like almost every other thread i post im probably gonna get the "wrong forum" thing, but idk if theres a actual forum or thread on here for this.

Download AVG and follow that. Run a scan, and it should take the malware off the computer.

Avast! is the best. AVG and Mcafee are kind of bloated.

Of course not. It's just ineffective, overpriced garbage. As has been said, AVG and avast! are both very good at stopping stuff before it gets out of hand, but since you already have junk I suggest Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, THEN put an anti-virus on (of course, AVG and avast! can remove stuff after the fact as well, they're just not as good at it IMO).

i was thinking of going with the kaspersky program, seeing how its inexpensive online and apparently can be used even when a computer is infected.

its really just a matter now of price and how it runs.

I have never had a (noticeable) virus on any of my pc's in the past; I use a Mac now but my most recent pc I used McAffee for about a year as I lived at home at the time and the ISP provided us with free McAffee for multiple computers.

Anyway, my only gripe with McAffee is that after a year they decided that they no longer thought having 3 computers in the house running it was fair, and only allowed updates on the main computer so I started using AVG and also had no problems with viruses as well.

It could be I was lucky, but I'm a firm believe in if you're careful and use your brain you aren't likely to get viruses.

Edit: Oh, and I used to use LimeWire and had no issues with viruses, so I think when people complain about LimeWire being virus-ridden, you just have to use your head before you download something (i.e if the file size is noticeably wrong, don't trust it etc.).
Hey, look. Sigs are back.

Just go download the programs suggested and try them. If they don't work, then you can pay money. If they do work, then you've just saved yourself the cost of an anti-virus program.

Also, not being stupid on the 'net is worth ꝏ more than any program.

and im too far away to fix the computer by hand, or send my friend over there to fix it.

got free copies of McAffee on both computers, works great as long as you have plenty of memory, wouldn't suggest it for computers with lower hardware specs

I use Avast! and Spybot: S&E in combination with Firefox using NoScript, SuperCookieSafegaurd, NoAutoPlay and AdBlock Plus+.

I haven't even had a tracking cookie in months, let alone an actual virus.
