im trying to write a solo like the intro one in fade to black, something with that sort of feel and texture to it but i cant seem to get my note choices to fit the sound i have in my head

Not scales, phrasing. Phrasing is the main thing that makes any solo different to any other.

Also if you're having trouble getting the sound you hear in your head try singing what you want and recoding it, that way you'll have an external reference to go by when trying to figure out the actual physical aspect of trying to play it.

I can't remember who said that, it might have been Zakk Wylde, but the key of F# sounds pretty good for metal. Take for example Crazy Train (especially the intro riff) by Ozzy...
