A friend of my dad makes an album each year with what he thinks are the best songs released that year. He's doing his since 2000 and now he wants to make an album with the best songs in the last ten years he's doing this.
I couldn't really pick out one song, I listen to a lot of songs that have been released before 2000, so does my dad so I ask the pit:
what do you think the best song released in the last 10 years?

Guerrilla Radio, or something else off of The Battle of Los Angeles
all I ever wanted was to pick apart the day

it would make the most sense to take one song from each of the CD's he has made over the past ten years rather than think what to put on it, plus we dont know what he likes or dislikes for music.

Subjective...

See I think the best pop song of the decade was Belle & Sebastian's "Wrapped Up In Books", in terms of construction, innovation, musicality...but I doubt anyone here knows that one...

in terms of most of those qualties plus zeitgeist,

i say New Slang by the Shins...

Hey man, we have our own tastes, right? The music I REALLY listen to is pretty much what I listen to on a rabid basis, so I normally stick kind of close to the vest Plus, a buttload of the stuff I listen to is before 1999.
I should venture out a little. Any suggestions?

And in response to TS, does nearly the entire Moulin Rouge! soundtrack count???

No, yeah, I hear you, it's all one's preference, I just get sick of hearing that when nothing could be farther from the truth.

I don't know, judging from your musical tastes, I could probably list you some bands that kick ass. Try some Queens of the Stone Age or something, they're a modern band with a heavy guitar sound, some bad-ass riffs, etc.

and maybe:
Portugal. The Man
Dr. Dog
Yo la Tengo

Youtube some stuff up, and if you like it, there'll probably be links to similar bands or whatever.
