Anyone else know any bands that are only famous because of a song they didn't write? Only two I can think of is Alien Ant Farm (and we all know why), and Billy Ray Cyrus.

Let's see if The Pit can think of more.

Alien Ant Farm. I wont say why.

I only know Mastodon because of their Orion cover on the Remastered by Kerrang! thing.

Somehow I think that list is slightly flawed.

i saw limp bizkit at a show in Montreal one time, and they played 9 songs in their set..... 4 were covers. Faith, Behind Blue Eyes, Sanitarium and the old guitarist (the one from snot) played Seek and Destroy with Lars, who came out randomly. Great show, not goin to lie, I still don't mind the odd Limp Bizkit tune, but they definitely got big off a single

Dare I say it, Jeff Buckley? Grace was an incredible album, but he got most of his attention from Hallelujah.

EDIT

Also, Gary Jules.

Quiet Riot for sure along with Twisted Sister. TS got big after Cum on Feel the Noize and then they got some of their own hits.

How about Elvis? Most of his songs were covers of 1930's african-american blues songs.

Alien Ant Farm has a lot of good songs, not just that cover. It is a sick cover, though.

That's not what made them famous.

Killswitch were pretty big - as big as any in that particular scene - before "Holy Diver." I think "My Curse" got them farther than "Holy Diver" ever did.
