I saw the G3 head, and what really caught my attention was the price. It's only $299 for the head, and it is a Randall amp. Could anyone comment on the quality of it? Is it up to Randall's usually standards? Or is it a cheap P.O.S. that's not worth the money.

Also, the site really isn't clear on what it is. Does anyone know if it's tube or SS? It says valve dynamic, but Idk what that is. Is that some kind of hybrid amp or something?

Also, if it is a SS amp, is it a good SS that won't need replacing for a while?

I play mostly Hard Rock. Everything from Rise Against, Foo Fighters, Breaking Benjamin, Nickelback to Stone Sour.

the G3 plus amps are very underrated amps.

Behemoth, Children Of Bodom, Chimaira, Lamb Of God etc.

Probably pretty decent for thrash, too; some of those bands used a lot of gain.

You CAN play anything with anything....but some guitars sound right for some things, and not for others. Single coils sound retarded for metal, though those who are apeshit about harpsichord probably beg to differ.

What about Alternative Metal? We do some covers of the bands I listed, but we mainly do our own thing, which is more Alt. Metal.

I had the G3 series combo, very sterile sounding. You would be better off looking for something else.

As long as it's good for Alt. metal, it works for me. We're trying to pull away from doing alot of covers, and start doing mostly our own thing. Are there any other suggestions for amps? I don't really wanna go over $1000 between the head and cab/combo.

Okay, so you play Alt Metal, are gigging and have an 800$ budget? Heres some suggestions...

Bugera 6262 + Tube/Speaker Swap.
Bugera 333 + Tube/Speaker Swap.
Various other Bugeras, 1960 etc.
Peavey Classic 30 + Boost.
Line 6 Vetta Combo. I'd rec this.
Line 6 Flextone II, might need miccing...
Peavey VTM, used by Soundgarden, so a good alt-rock tone. Tough to dial in though.
Peavey Ultra, kind of marshally IMO.

All of those are $800>, even the Bugera combos... Personally, I'd get the cheapest Bugera head you like, and get a speaker cab from Avatar, whichever size you can afford. Either that or get the Line 6 Vetta II, used a 2x12 is inbetween 600$-1000$, depending on your dealfinding skills...

Also, these are used prices, if you don't want to buy used then my response can be TL;DR'd to
