well, like the title says, my vk112 crapped out on me. i'm pretty sure it's not a tube problem, even though they're about 2 years old, but i figured i'd double check with you guys. what's happening is that my clean channel sounds kinda like the lead channel, but crappier. you'd think it's the tubes or something, but none of the controls on the clean channel work except the bright switch, and my footswitch is kind of unreliable now. this leads me to believe it's some internal problem, but i want your guys' opinions. thanks for the help!

i believe the tube test goes like this. turn the amp on without the guitar plugged in, and tap the tubes lighting with the eraser on a pencil. if u hear something go thru the speakers, the tubes are bad. the controls might not work because the tubes are overriding all the sound ur making. try that first, then report back.

It sounds like your tubes have indeed crapped out on you.

A full retube improves the Valveking. Give it a shot.

hmm alright. when i get the chance, i'll try and do that test. in the meantime, what tubes would you guys suggest? i'm looking for a very old-school classic rock/bluesy/funky sound. i think the tubes in it right now are ruby's in the poweramp and ehx in the preamp.

yeah i've read it before, i was just wondering if anyone knew of any particularly good tubes for a valveking. right now i'm looking at going ehx across the board.

try the other insert jack
try your guitar in a different amp
try a different guitar in your amp
swap the preamp tubes around as mentioned
make sure all tubes are seated (pushed down) all the way
take all pedals out of the mix
what guitar/pups do you have

well, mixed news guys. the tubes made it sound a little better (i replaced all of them), but the knobs still won't work right with the clean channel, so i guess it's not the tubes. however, i'm gonna turn this into a good thing. my little brother needs an amp, but is very low on cash, so i'm gonna give my vk to him and let him pay to get it fixed, while i use this incident as an excuse to buy a new amp, probably the blackheart handsome devil, which i've been wanting for a while now. thanks for all the help though.
