What is the difference between the two?

I want to get one so I can use something other than distortion.

Echo and delay are the same thing.

They are the same effects unit. An echo is a particular setting on delay, at least to me. In general terms I think they are the same.

So what would be a good one to get? and I don't want to spend over $120 please.

Do you want long delay (greater than a second) or short? Do you want warm repeats?

I recommend the EHX Memory Boy; I can't really think of a good digital delay for less than $120.

DD3 is one of my favourites. not too pricey and it gets the job done. plus you get the nice sterile repeats of digital delay! (to all the "anal0g teh bettur" people)

I was looking at that, but wasn't sure if it was good.

Short with cold repeats, I'd have to recommend the DD3.

Listen to clips of both the Memory Boy and DD3.

I've always used the Boss DD3. Never had any problems with it.

If you want to get really technical about it..

1. Grab sticks.
2. Bang sticks on drums.

I've had mine for three years now (a refurbished model), and i've never had a problem with it. my teacher has had his since the 90's, and he's never had a problem either.

Conversely, my DD3 stopped working after about a year.

i'd take a memory boy over a dd3 any day. sound quality is more important than features for me. and the memory boy is pretty packed with features anyway (useful ones lol)

the DD3 isn't that packed

but the sound quality on the DD3 is very good. i find digital delay has a better sound quality than analog. analog is goof for short bursts (slapback <300ms) but the repeats get mushy and undefined after long delays.

^ thats the point of analog delays, they decay in quality and level as they go on. it sounds very warm and can add a lot of depth. digital delay is great for those precise repeats and adding an extra layer. both have their purposes, and thats why a lot of rigs have both kinds of delay on them.
