What to you is the ideal guitar (or indeed bass) tone in metal? As far as I'm concerned, None So Vile is the shizz, Scarve's Irradiant is pretty close behind.

Don't think this has been done before anyway...

Guitar tone? Probably The Black Dahlia Murder circa-Nocturnal for me. That tone rips.
Bass? No clue. Don't hear enough bass tones. Dan Briggs from BTBAM has a sweet one though.

The tone from Carcass in Heartwork era.

bass tone: maiden's somewhere in time album (still life, the loneliness of the long distance runner, ETC.)

guitar tone: it all sounds the same to me actually :p but i love Tony Iommi's tone on Heaven and hell's latest album!

I can't really think of any band's tone that I particularly like. Especially in metal with the whole more distortion=better tone ethos bull**** that perpetuates the general metalhead's thinking so much that they actually decide to get active pickups put in their guitar.

But so far I think the best guitar tone I have heard would be Mark Tremonti's.

Personally my settings are:

Distortion: 5.5
Bass: 6
Mid: 7
Treble: 6.5

Coupled with a set of dimarzio D-Sonics the chunk of those settings is killer.

And to Magero? Black Dahlia Murder Nocturnal? eww. I remember once when the came onto my iPod at random and I thought, "my god that is the worst tone I have ever heard." :p

Devy Wevy's tone > all.

Although I've recently managed to get a tone I'm reasonably happy with, so hooray.

Haha, get fucked. It's amazing, so heavy, yet still defined.
You were listening to it through an iPod so...

Chuck had one of the best tones I've heard.

Remission/Leviathan era Mastodon and Nevermore's tone on TGE are two of my favorites.
Dyer's Eve is awesome, and has an abnormally large penis, which doesn't act as any hinderance to his everyday life despite its freakishly large size.

I know this is an odd choice, but I love Scott Hull's tone on Terrifyer, especially the song Carrion Fairy.

Haha like it would sound any different than if I were listening to it through my laptop. MP3 is still MP3.

I just find the tone thin and lifeless.

If I could make a combination of NSV tone and BMF tone, it would be perfect,

not to say that they aren't both perfect already.

dang now people are questioning guitar tones' purpose, liveliness and shit?

hm...

the one in Funeral's Tragedies XD

Dismember's on Like An Ever Flowing Stream

um...

I'm pretty content with the tone from my Spider 3 amp's "insane" setting lol

It really depends on the band and sub-genre. I mean, bands like Opeth 1wouldn't really work with the Slaughter of the Soul tone. I like Brendon Small's guitar tone, however funny that may sound, and Megadeth's guitar tone on UA was pretty great, it was very modest, I guess. they didn't rape the treble and gain. The tone on Heartwork by Carcass is pretty great, how it's basically just the notes drenched in distortion.

I've always liked the early 90's death metal tone, mainly Death's Human, Carcass' Heartwork and Cannibal Corpse's Tomb Of The Mutilated.

Death metal : Nox and Centurian, **** ing awesome tones.

Melodeath : None other than the absence

I haven't really thought about all the other genres though

Cycles by Rotten Sound is probably my favourite representation of the old school Swedish death metal sound, it makes me want to smash things with other things out of joy.
There's something I really like about Vogg's tone on The Negation too.

As for drums, Adam Jarvis of Misery Index has one of best tones I've ever heard on Traitors.

Edit: Actually, now that I think about it, the tone of every insturment on Cycles makes me want to smash things with other things out of joy.
