Hi pit, as some of you might know, I play basketball. At my most recent game ( state finals ), we were playing in front of some talent scouts, I just found out today that I have been selected to move to the U.S.A to train and play in the Houston Rockets junior league. The camp runs for 18 months.

At first I was extremely happy with the news and then I found out that I would be coming alone, my mum doesn't have enough money to move to America so I will have to go myself. All expenses are paid by Houston Sport Center and I have to stay at a boarding school.

I am really worried about my mum being by herself though. She is a single parent and looking after both my sisters.

All in all I was wondering what the pit thinks I should do, I am only 14 and 6'4 so I am definitely looking to play basketball when I am older.

Thanks - Davo. ( I highlighted the " Important " parts so that you tl;dr people will be able to help )

Jesus Christ, you're 14 and 6'4?
Do you have any siblings?
EDIT: Sorry, missed that detail. How old are they?
To play basketball over here is pretty amazing, I give you props, bro.

OK thanks guys. Well I guess I'll elaborate.

My dad passed away before I was 3 years old. My mum recently has gone through depression. I am not sure whether my dream is worth pursuing if it means my mum wont be OK.

congrats man, and how are old your sisters?

Nice one man, congratulations. I'm sure if you go that she'll have more time for your sisters. I'd say go, this is once in a lifetime.

Would you be able to do it maybe next year?

Dude, you have to take this now, so that you can have a chance making big money in the future to support your family for your entire life
#11
Go for it dude, yes, it could suck for you mom and siblings right away, but if you do somehow get on that team, you'd be making enough money to support them all. You shouldn't worry so much about it if you're all having such trouble right now, as you should be thinking of how you can be helping them and yourself that much, ya know? No, it may not work out in a happy way, but if it does; you, alone, could be making all of your lives that much better. It's a rare opportunity, I'd honestly say, go for it. I'll also say, good luck with whatever you decide.

edit - I just read what you posted about your dad, and yes, that may suck, but you need to also think about what you could bring your family. You are young and it may seem like a huge deal to you, but you could bring them so much support (financially), you could change all of your lives. It's really worth pursuing, just talk with your family about it, and if they really have strong, STRONG arguments against it.. then I'd say stay with them and do your best to help them out as much as you can. I just think there's no extreme harm in pursuing something this big.

Well I think you should go for it. Traveling to another country alone is an incredible experience. I'm guessing you're from England? Also, your nearby family will most likely help out your mom and sis knowing you're gonna be gone for so long. What state is it in?

I'm sorry but this is FatBastard's cousin here, he's on his bedroom's corner feeling miserable because he's 15 and 5'7" or something like that.

Congratulations.

I say go for it. It's an opportunity to take. You can make sure your mum is able to cope, and having this opportunity and taking it would make her proud if anything.
As you said, it's an 18 month camp, so if nothing eventuates you'll be able to come back. If something does come of the camp, then you'll be able to support your family rather easily.

Thanks for the advice. I'm going to put it, along with your other advice, into a book, the pages of which I will then use to wipe my ass.

True, I know something will come out of it, I was drafted 2nd in the juniors.

Chances are I will be living in the U.S.A

Don't do it, basketball sucks.
I think its time to pack your things lets go,
To a place where we both know,
And dont worry, I'll drive real slow,
Spend some time before we go..

So the camp is in Houston? I've been there before. Hot in the summer, but not as muggy as the cities closer to the ocean.

Really, just go for it, you can make such a better life for yourself and your family. It may seem like a risk now, but it's definitely a risk to take.

edit - If I could, I'd go for something like this. I'm 22 and 6'4", but I've never had a chance like this, and now.. I'm working a terrible labor job that I can barely depend on myself for; please, just go for it and all the best luck with whatever your decision is.. haha.

Thanks.

Who do you go for in the NBA?

Me? No one, I'm not a fan of basketball, sorry. But I can tell how big it is over here, and my town is absolute apeshit about it, which is ironic, seeing as how the boy's team sucks ass.

Only way Australia has affected my life is one of my friends brought back kangaroo jerky. He went there to run cross country. Lucky guy, he went to Costa Rica, too, but I was on that trip as well.

I would love to make it in the NBA. Lebron James get's 90 mill.

I don't want to just make it because of money though, I have trained 2 hours a day and 4 and a half on weekends for this.

Just call me Ian, it's shorter and not obnoxious.
I didn't get to go, it was my friend. I got to go to Costa Rica.
I wasn't in Houston much but from what I can remember there's porn shops everywhere you turn. It was during the summer and hot as hell (which is normal for me, it was 90 on Friday and peaks to 110)
I was travelling through it more than being out in the street, so I have no idea what the people are like there, sorry.
