I heard theres an idea being kicked around congress to mandate porn sites to use .xxx instead of .com. They say it will help protect kids from accidentally finding porn.

What do you guys think? Good idea? Bad idea?

I personally think it's a dumb idea, if anything it will only make it easier to find porn. Any kid could decide "Hmm, I like big boobs. I'll try 'www.bigboobs.xxx'".

Excellent idea, it'll help me find it much more easily anyway.

I think it's good, because then things like "oh hey, let's click on this funny website link a co-worker sent to me" won't end in your computers blaring gay porn and you getting fired.

yeah that's right... kids have absolutely no idea what they're looking for when they type "blonde milf rubs one out" into google. they "accidentally" find it...

Only fools type up porn in the address bar. It will work until one kid figures it out and tells all his little buddies how to find pr0nz.

I like the idea. It will prevent accidental in-counters with sites like the whitehouse one..(if ya know what I mean..)
EDIT: I still dont think it will make that much of a difference though to prevent kids from finding it willingly..

I actually think that's a pretty good idea. I mean, anyone looking for porn would find it just as easily anyways, it's not like making porn URLs .xxx would all of a sudden make it SO much easier. It'd definitely keep people who weren't looking for it away from it, though.
#11
I like it. Some little kids accidentally click on that ****, I've seen it happen. I say go for it congress, you don't have anything better to do.

I agree, and I admit I was really just picking on one really dumb argument.

And unfortunately I heard of the whitehouse website thing a few years ago, but when I tried to go it came to one of those generic sites that have links to stupid commercial websites. Searched Google, apparently the owner of the old site sold the domain name. Darn....

Because without the .xxx, "big boobs" doesn't sound sexual at all, and putting a .com after it would never occur to those kids.

How is that different to their deciding "Hmm, I like big boobs. I'll try 'www.bigboobs.com'"? Porn is ridiculously easy to find if you're looking for it.

It is, but once in a while you get those sites that really don't have anything there. You know, the onces that just provide links to stuff like life insurance and cat food? Google ftw, but like I said in my last post, saying it will keep kids from finding it is a silly statement. I agree that accidents will be reduced to maybe .1% of what they are (and perhaps everything Rick Astly should have a .rickroll) and we can all agree that accidents suck.

I'm not sure but it sounds like you don't quite understand. They're trying to make it so that you know that all porn will have .xxx. Anything with .com will NOT be pornographic.

What would they know about internet porn? They're all out looking for prostitutes and gay lovers.

I know, I was trying to say the same thing as before in a slightly more sarcastic way. If a kid decides to look for a site with big tits on it, putting a .com after it is just as easy as putting a .xxx.

I don't really think it makes THAT much of a difference...

also, what about pornographic BLOGS? and porn journals? what about sites hosting erotic literature? It complicates things A LOT.

what would 4chan be under?

what about a site or web forum that is not specifically dedicated to pornography but does not prohibit the occasional porn picture? would it be .xxx too?

It would be easy for the big-name porn sites to switch, but not for everyone else.

Kids who want to find porn are gonna find it without problems as long as they have an internet connection. But this will make it simpler at places like schools where a lot of sites are blocked for supposedly being porn. You could simply put a block on .xxx sites and be done with it all. And people who choose not to look at porn don't have to worry about accidentally finding some.

What I am wondering about is , how/who will decide what is considered "pornography" ? Even Wikipedia has images some people would consider obscene and pornographic. And after this , will we need to make TLDs for sites with violence or profanities ?

Valid point. And I think it would only apply to porn sites on American servers (and maybe anything owned or operated in the US). The more that comes up, the more silly it looks for congress to even bother. Aren't there bigger things that need attention?

That's also tough. Then we may even go so far as to have a censorship issue.

Then parents can just make their filters block all .xxx sites, no?

EDIT: lol didn't see the post 2 up from this one.

What jurisdiction does the internet fall under? Can the US actually do this?

I guess its for UG hosted web sites?

Google would still find them, so it would only stop kids who tried to put in sex-lol-boobs-etc.com into the search bar.

And if they did put it into Firefox, it would do a Google "I'm Feeling Lucky" search on it and find the .xxx address anyway.

I think it's a good idea. There are porn sites that use names similar to popular website names just so they get more traffic from people misspelling the addresses, so this would eliminate that. It would not however, keep kids from finding porn

I'm aware, but TS brought it up like it was a new thing they're actually considering. I merely pointed out that the idea's been thrown around in Congress for several years now, and most likely will never make the floor. That's considering that someone actually bothers to write a bill for it.
