Hey guys i'm looking for a head thats not too expensive, one that can give me a real smooth, yet punchy distortion.

can anyone recommend me something? the most i want to spend is 800 bucks.

i plan on playing gigs with this too.

I love how no one has asked what genres the OP plays.

What do you play, OP? Your descriptions of what you're looking for are very vague.

I play punk and hardcore along. I want a gain channel thats not TOO much distortion to the point where it sounds fuzzy. I like a smooth or warm gain, but also with some kick/punch to it.

you can also try to find an ENGL fireball 60W for about $800. I am sure I saw one or two on harmony central.

Mesa Single Rectifier
marshall JCM900
Orange Dual Terror.

depending on what you want to play. the mesa is great for metal, the marshall is great for a modern rock sound, and the orange has a great vintage tone
