Its kind of like an illusion in a way. Your eyes tell you that the centre of mass is past the edge of the cup and the utensils should fall, but because of the handles, the centre of mass is further inwards and stably supported by the cup.

when i saw the thread, i thought it would be the forks/toothpick thing :P
Yeah me and my mate tried this, it works cos the handles of the forks go past the toothpick and balance it out.
