What type of strings would I need if I wanted to detune from EADGBE, down to F#BEADG ?

This is the tuning that a 8 string guitar would be in, like Meshuggah use. What I want to know is how heavy would the strings need to be?

I have a set of 56 strings at the moment and they are tight when detuned down to BEADGB but when I go lower, they start flapping around.

maybe 11, 12 or 13 gauge?

Elixir make some good strings. The KFK (kerry king) signature strings can take alot of punishment.

That's nearly down an octave.

I'd shoot for 14s if I were you.

Try to find .14s, .13s won't be very tight. I use .13s for drop A and they're only barely tight enough.

Alternatively, you might want to try bridge cables.

Maybe if you get a 7-string pack and ditch the high string?

I heard SRV used past 14s in standard tuning / half a step down but his guitar probably had to have the nut sorted out and have everything adjusted for that.

Buy higher than 14s. 13s won't cut it, 14s will still be floppy. Buy baritone strings maybe.

I can't use baritone strings, I have a floyd rose and it would just break with all that tension.

This is absolutely ridiculous. You're almost into the range of a bass.

Nope.

With the tuning you've suggested, you'll have far less tension using a set of baritone strings than you would if you had standard tuning and set of light gauge strings.

There are string tension charts on the net that show tension for a given string as a function of what not it's tuned to and the scale length. Do a little research.

I must say that even with the huge strings, your guitar will have awful intonation and won't sound nearly as good as an extended-range guitar would.
